Hard drive poll, which do you prefer?

I go with whichever one is good at the size I am looking at at the time. I find that, while a certain brand may have a better track record than another, HDD's usually vary from model to model. WD may be good once, and suck the next. Or run cool on their 300gig and hot on their 400gig models, for example. That is an example, not a fact. That last part :) I just read the user reviews and get the one that is in line with what I am looking for. Noise, relaibility, heat, etc, etc.

I'm running two Seagate Barracuda 7200 rpm SATA II's in an external enclosure currently, by the way. They are running cool, and so far very efficiently.

im not sure this is a poll you want to do, everyone has different experiences and there will be at least one person who swears up and down NEVER EVER USE (this brand) or you will lose everything.... buy based on price, specs, warranty, not necessarily in that order... there is once and a while a specific drive model that is a dud, so figure out which make model those are and stay away..

I like Maxtor as they seem to reliable . I have 2 now that are a few years old and they still go , where as I also have gone thru at least 3 Western Digital (2 250s and a 160 which just failed recently) all 3 failed with no warning .
There will be no more WDs for me.

Hey Ramjet,
A few people said that the Seagate was the way to go. Do you know where they're available at good/great prices?

Uhm, the ones I got a couple of months ago, I got on www.newegg.com I think it was 190 for both. Like I said though, just find the sweet spot in the size around what you are looking for and read a bunch of the user reviews from places like newegg, etc. and find one of the brands that are reliable at that size/price range. It does vary. For me, the last time it was seagate, at that size. Good luck.

I used to love Maxtor -- then a couple of my Maxot drives failed on me.
Then I loved Western Digital -- but a couple of my WD drives failed on me.
Now I love Seagate -- probably until they fail on me.
I guess I tend to go with whatever brand hasn't died on me recently. I'll eventually have to come full circle I suppose.

That's exactly what happened to me.
Last year I purchased my first 250 WD and it never lasted a week , the other 2 just a few months each .
What a let down WD was , next purchase I think will be a Seagate.

I've been in IT for a near decade. Brand loyalty can change with a new model, but Seagate has been the most reliable for me. 5 year replacement warranty, you should always backup your important data anyway, but they are fantastic drives.

WD has made a come back to me and Maxtor has taken a dive. Fujitsu have made good drives as well as Hitachi.

www.bensbargains.net for the best prices on technology.
