hard drive - internal or external?

i have been working off of a 5-year-old lacie hard drive 250gb and am now in the market for a new hard drive.

i don't know whether to buy internal or external, what the benefit of either is. it seems like external might actually be cheaper, which doesn't seem to make sense. i'm also not sure how speedy i need it to be.

i am editing minidv but want to keep my options open for dvcam or hd in case i transition one day. i'm working on 1.5 year-old mac pro- 2x3 ghz dual core xeon.

any recommendations?

thanks!

internals are cheaper... go to newegg.com

pick up something like a WD Black series 1TB for $110. you'll be good to go. install is very simple with the Mac Pro.

Not sure how much money you want to spend, or size you want. But for minidv, Id get two internal 500's and set them up as a stripe raid and ALSO get an external 1tb drive for a daily backup.

RAID0 is extreme overkill for DV... start with a single 1TB (and make sure you have a backup) and then when you move to HD, get a 2nd 1TB and stripe them.

I would put a 2-disk software RAID0 between 150-160MB/s for R/W.

I'm doing a 4-disk RAID5 with the CalDigit card and get 210-225MB/s.

thanks, i like the idea of getting the 1tb internal drive, and upgrading later if necessary. thanks for all your input!

External.
You might want to take the drive with you to a new machine or work or wherever.
Internal limits your options.
