I have an external lacie harddrive on my windows xp pc. so i turn it on today and it bugs out. now when i restart the computer it gives me a check up on "consistency" or something. i let it do its job, but now when i go and try to open my HD it wont let me. the check up kept saying "recovering orphan file...unable to recover due to inconsistant space" or something like that. the drive name was called M now its back to E, but it still has the same amount of memory used with the files on.
Please someone help!!!

Try formatting your hard drive.

You probably know this, but I'll give you directions anyway.

Go to Start --> Settings --> Control Panel --> Administrative Tools --> Computer Management --> Disk Management

If you go there, you will be able to format, change name on drive, and do all kinds of things to your existing hard drives including external drives.
Try full formatting it, not quick format.

Good luck.

Yes, it will erase all the data on your hard drive.
If your files are very important, do not format, just try on another computer.
If it works OK on another computer, your computer has problem, so just re-install Windows XP after formatting your C drive.
If same thing happens on another computer, there is something wrong with your external drive.
Try moving the files to another drive or back up to a CD or DVD, but if you can't open the drive at all, just take it to data recovery lab.
Also, you can run a Norton Utility to scan your external drive and fix any errors on it.
I think you can download the trial version from their website.
Hope this helps.
