I have an external lacie harddrive on my windows xp pc. so i turn it on today and it bugs out. now when i restart the computer it gives me a check up on "consistency" or something. i let it do its job, but now when i go and try to open my HD it wont let me. the check up kept saying "recovering orphan file...unable to recover due to inconsistant space" or something like that. the drive name was called M now its back to E, but it still has the same amount of memory used with the files on.
Please someone help!!!

Are you using Service Pack 2? Lacie has problems if the firmware isn't updated for service pack 2. I had a problem a few months ago with a Lacie drive crapping out. Its fairly well documented on their website, and they haven't totally solved all the issues with it.

havent tried that solution. which update am i looking for exactly?
i have the 120 gig d2 hd by the way.

I just bought a 400gig for $260 bucks and it's working perfectly at the moment. I'm capturing 18 hours worth of footage at the moment. 0 dropped frames, low noise, and looks cool! $260 is not a bad deal..

I still running service pack 1 becuase 2 was giving me a sh*t load of problems!

Peace!

Please tell me how to go back to sp1!
I didnt know this was possible or else i would have done this long ago!
Please...

You might try asking your question at http://www/majorgeeks.com this is a great resource for PC users. Why do you want to roll back to SP1? Bluespider, what sort of problems where you having with SP2? I have been running it for about four months and I've been very happy with it. I had one issue with the installation of a FW800 card that I couldn't resolve. I simply installed a FW400 card and run at that speed.

I recently purchased four 200GB Western Digital drives for $70ea. With a FW800 four bay enclosure it costs about $400 for 800GB.

The main reason I uninstalled my SP2 is because my FW1884 audio board was having firewire problems. As soon as I uninstalled it everything worked perfectly. Plus I didn't any reason to go back to SP2.

Just go to add/remove programs and choose to uninstall SP2

Backup your work before you do that. The last time I did the add/remove SP2 my computer locked up and everything else crashed right after! Back up all important stuff first!

I experienced a similar issue after the power went out due to a thunderstorm. SP1a. Checked the drive and everything OK, but now I'm putting a battery backup into my budget (finally).

And Chuck, hook us up!

My work IS backed up, on my lacie hard drive that i cant open!!
I'll try to roll it back to sp1 and see if that does anything, but i dont know. :(

have you tried disconnecting the drive, restarting the computer, then shutting down, then reconnecting the drive, and starting up again?

if you still don't see a drive there, look under start>settings>control panel>administrative tools>computer management and see if your drive is listed under "Disk Management" on the left.
