I've got a 27" iMac Core i5 late 2013. I've got it hooked up to two LaCie external drives via Thunderbolt, a 4tb and 8tb both raided down to half capacity.
I could only get a 1tb internal hard drive when I bought the iMac, and the drive is already filled up, mostly with FCPX material. I edit a lot of hi-def, but no 4K yet.
I'd like to get FCPX to use proxy media and keep the main files on the LaCie drives, but it won't let me. Not sure why that is, but when I try to change the settings on where to save things, the "OK" is greyed out, and when I try to do proxy media on import, those choices are also greyed out.
My usual workflow is that when I take material directly off the cameras I put it on the 2tb drive, then make an exact copy on the 4tb drive (yeah, I know, I'm paranoid, with the raid I end up with four copies of everything, but I can always ad external hard drives). Then I pull the files off the 2tb drive into FCPX. As I mentioned, usually (but not always), the choice to create proxy media is greyed out.
Not sure what I can do here. I've been thinking of moving up to a Mac Pro, but how can I be sure that FCPX will let me save stuff to external drives with that computer? What gives?
Also, on my older iMac I recently replaced the hard drive, and upgraded from 1tb to 2tb with a kit I got from Other World Computing. The process went flawlessly, and I'm wondering if I should try that with this computer. However, this is my main editing machine now, and I'm in the middle of a massive project, so I don't want to risk anything.
While I've got people's attention, another question-- would it be possible to hook this iMac up to the Pro and get them to work in tandem, with the 2013 iMac being used as the monitor?
Any suggestions welcome.
