Hard drive crash? Don't assume anything!

A few month ago my external raid crashed, containing a lot of stock footage and FCP project files. Not all were backed up, due to lack of space on extra drives. After spending hours checking out the drive, I put it aside and forgot about it ( I did try to locate a replacement power supply, not really knowing if that was the problem, with no success). Last week I tried again and located a replacement power supply. Got it, plugged it in, VOILA, drive worked again like new.

Moral of the story is don't give up on an external drive until you have tried another power supply- it just might work. For me, it's the third time it's worked. Other moral of the story - back your stuff up!

Most hard drive failures can be recovered- either through fixing the drive or data recovery services. Pretty much has to be destroyed in fire to really be 100% unrecoverable in most cases. Just a question of how much the data is worth to you. For this reason- I recommend backups.
