Hard Disc recorder can double as a mixer as well?

I understand the function of a mixer but are there not hard disk recorders that also perform the vital functions that a mixer does?

I see the Sound Devices HD recorders offer high pass filters, phantom power, and limiters so if these were the main reasons I would buy a mixer then is there any reason I can just skip the mixer and only buy the HD recorder?

The FR-2 is just a 2 track machine...and not that great, if you ask me. Something like the 744t really doesn't have mixing features on it, but you can do some limited routing. Something like a Deva IV or V, HHB Portadrive, Fostex PD-6, or Aaton Cantar have internal mixers. The ones in the Deva IV or V are the best, but you're looking at spending between $13K or $15K depending on which machine you get. On the budget side for recorders, you will need a mixer in front of them.
