Hard Case vs. Soft Case PLEASE HELP.

i have to say i was pretty annoyed with my pelican hardcase,.... i only bought it about a month ago but i threw the box out as i kinda thought if a humvee can drive over it how could little me possibly manage to break it ?

Glenurse- Sorry to hear that. I have a 1514 and absolutely love it. I've traveled with it a few times, and as advertised, it fits perfectly in the overhead compartment bin on a plane. It's durable, the wheels ride smoothly and it carries just enough of the bare minimums.

I hope you can get yours up and running.

Glen, Pelican has a lifetime warranty. This is definitely new to my ears; man I have never heard of those things failing, minus a broken latch. You should just mail it to them, and they will fix it for free.

thanks both of you. yep i was pretty surprised when the thing broke at the airport and figured i mustve just been unlucky enough to get a dodgy one.
i will send it back to get it sorted though, other than the bolts coming out it was great, fitted into every overhead compartment during my 6 flights on my trip, and made an ideal box to stand on when shooting over a large crowd, it also got thrown around quite a bit on the road and did great.
one other question, my pick n pluck foam didnt fare too well and ended up in several bits, does anyone make a precut insert for the dvx as i think i cut mine to close to the edge of the case and that affected its durability.

thought i would stick my little bit of info if it is of any use..

I could not believe the price of cases both soft and hard in the UK, however i bought a nice aluminium case from a hairdressers supplies place, bought some anti-static foam and started cutting and shaping the foam, hey presto after a few hours I have a case with slots for everything i have, what could be better, ok it wont be 100% waterproof, but I dont have the need for that, I dont take my case swimming...lol

The case which fits the cam and all cost less than £30....

Hi Glen, ask Pelican when you call them, they may have solid pieces. You would wet that, put it in the freezer, then use a serrated knife to cut a pattern in the chilled foam. That will make a perfect pattern. Then you would use a heat gun to seal in the foam and make it rounded. You don't have to go that far, but that's how you can cut your own pattern. :)

Another good thing about the Pelican, is that if your plane explodes in mid-flight and all the flaming pieces plumet 40,000 feet into the ocean, your gear would probably be safe.

And I think it would still be under warranty.

Also remember to unscrew the little air plug a bit. A couple times I forgot, and found the Pelican on the carousel puffed-up like it was about to burst, or sucked-in like it was carrying a black hole.

Coming from the still-photo world, I can add the following:

Cameras and laptops ALWAYS travel in the cabin. Not so much for security, but what happens when your checked bags don't show up? I've had shoots where the lighting gear went to some other destination for three days, but was I still able to complete the assignment. Cameras ALWAYS travel on your person (or the assistant's, even better) in the cabin. Deadlines won't wait for lost luggage. Did I say ALWAYS?

I love rolling bags for everything. Have a look at yourself in the mirror carrying a heavy shoulder bag- look at your posture, the curve of your spine compensating for the imbalanced load. Not good.

When I bought my DVX, I just cleared out one of my rolling Tamrac bags and love it. Plenty of room, lots of protection- the value of the contents of my main SLR bag makes the dvx look like a small down payment and I've never had a single damaged item while in the bag, despite being heavy as hell.

The cubed foam in the pelican cases is AWFUL stuff. It will eventually degrade over time and use, and when it does, the teeny foam bits will get into every moving part of the contents, including zoom lenses and tape transports. I once had to have an entire Hassy kit CLA'd by the service center due to that foam crap. Stick with the padded velour and velcro stuff.

Tamrac has a great line of backpacks, including rollers, that are roomy and protective.

Another thing about the Hardigg - and I think Pelican still does this as well - they have lifetime warranties. You will be hard pressed to find another option for less than $150 that gives you that guarantee - take the plunge and protect your gear.

Yet another pitch for my buddies at Hardigg...

You said it!

I work here at Hardigg. They do a quality job and are constantly trying to do better. One thing that surprises me is that they always look at the cost to the consumer when trying to make a product better.
Our storm cases are current injection molded. Hopefully in the near future we can make a bigger size for those who have bigger equipment.

Great thread with case comparisons. I'm in the process of selecting a case and this really helped out! Thanks..
