Hard Case question

Hi,

I bought a hard case from Magna cases on eBay. It comes with removeable foam cuboids (not cubes exactly as they have one side, ie depth longer than the other two) and a chicken egg create foam thing on top.

I put in my camera to test the case but it takes lot of pressure to close the case. I fear that the pressure that foam puts on the camera will damage it. So I removed the cuboids all the way to bottom make a compartment same as profile of the camera and removed the top foam altogether. Now the case closes without much pressure but I feel it defeats the purpose of the case as it offers no protection from top and bottom.

1. What is the best way to store the camera. Should I cut the cuboids in half to get some cushion on bottom and cut the top foam in same way to make a foam "box"?

2. If I dont cut the top and bottom then can the pressure from foam damage the camera?

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Best regards,

J.

Well you pretty much answered your own question. Cuboids in = to much pressure on the camera. Cuboids out = no protection for the camera. Unless you can trim down the size of the cuboids to get a go-between, I'd say you need to get a new case for the camera.

Rush at EVS can help you pick out a great Pelican case, and they aren't expensive. Look at it this way... if you can afford the price of a DVX you can and should afford a good case to protect it... else your buyin' a new DVX. Of course Rush could help you with that too...

Hi jangej, I would say your best bet, if you having problems with the cuboids, is to at least find a similar pelican case, and get the pick/pluck foam insert for your case. They cost 1/3 as much as the case, and you get to use your existing case. Their codes usuall start the same size as the case, so a 1550 case would use a 1551 foam insert.

thanks Guys. I did trim the cuboids and now it seems getting better. With time I will try to slip in the egg crate foam too.

Regards,

I have a Pelican 1550 and it nicely holds my 100A, three batteries, the charger/ac adapter and some a/v cables. And there's room to spare. The Pelican is my carry on item and just in case the airline loses/misplaces all my other equipment, the project will go on.

Do you think it would be to heavy to carry around for regular use? I think I read some where that it only weighs eight pounds which isnt bad. Is it easy to customize it? Help is much appreciated.

As far as I know, the 1500 is too small for the DVX. The smallest one that can hold it is the 1520. The 1510 is perfectly airline carryon legal, and we have all our rental DVX's in 1550's.

The 1550's are very compact and easy to carry, especially now that they all have rubberized handles. In a pinch you can use one to deflect an assailant :cheesy:

I have a Pelican 1520 with the 1527 soft insert. Great for having option of hard case or softcase depending on the shoot and location. 1520 fits airline sizes.
I've got standard gear with batteries but it's unlikely to hold full matte box, lonmg shotgun, anamorphic lens and all bells and whistles.

In a pinch you can use one to deflect an assailant.

And then you can "cover" the aftermath for posterity.
