Hansel and Gretel

Saw this one in 3d because the people with me wanted 3d. I would have been happy with 2d and I don't think the 3d added anything to this one at all, and it was not particularly good 3d. They did offer an HFR version when we bought tickets which we did not see, but I didn't know this was shot in HFR? It was shot in an Arri Alexa.

I liked the sort of steampunk weapons and costumes. the actress that played the head evil witch was good,
[h=1][SUB]Famke Janssen. She was Phoenix in Xmen. [/SUB][/h]I give it like a B or B+. The script wasn't very good, but the movie was entertaining. I didn't sit there going, wtf this is really bad and boring and these days I give high marks for that.

I was a bit disappointed there wasn't more magic. This is supposed to be about Hansel and Gretel growing up to be "Witch Hunters". Witches are evil beings that wreck havoc on villages and steal children and you have to hire badass witch hunters to go after them. Very similar to the premise for The Brothers Grimm (which was terrible).

But the Witches in this movie must have been training with Jackie Chan or Morpheus from The Matrix. They all know hand to hand combat like badass Ninjas, and there are countless fight scenes with so many punches, kicks, elbows, and so forth that you can't keep up with all the fighting. Now and then for good measure they throw a spell, but the main action is kung fu fighting. The fight scenes were solid, well choreographed and tightly edited, but just a little over done. More plot, more magic, less Kung Fu would have been better IMO.

I really like the Troll, Edward. I think it was a make up animatronic or something, not just CGI. At least I got that impression from the credits and it looked more like animatronic than CGI. Really nice job, great creature FX.

Compared to a lot of movies these days the FX and CGI was minimal. Certainly some spell FX and green screen work, but a lot of practical FX and I really like that. There were plenty of CGI credits at the end, but nothing like the army of CGI credits for 100's of CGI studios for a Prometheus or something like that.

I would say it's worth a matinee 2d showing for sure.
