Hanging

Re: Hanging

You can do this effect with an undercloths harness and 3/32 aircraft cable. Run the cable inside the rope through the base of the knot and then to the upper back pickpoint of your harness. The noose should not be tied, but instead tied, then cut, and pinned into place. The cable supports the weight, and in case the rope slips, the noose will slip open insted of strangling your talent. You can get an inexpensive full body harness from AmSpec for about 190 dollars:

As someone else said, I would recommend finding a qualified stunt coordinator to rig this stunt for you. It is simple, but if you have no experience, you could easilly hurt someone. I do some free work for indy films. Feel free to contact me if you would like some help.

Re: Hanging

Please do be careful; I lost a friend during the 6th grade who wanted to grow up to be a stunt man. His hanging harness failed and he in fact hanged himself. Whatever rig you come up with, make sure that a failure of the harness causes the actor to drop, and not actually hang.

Re: Hanging

You need a full body harness, Deist, Amspec (L.A.). They run about $100, and have pick points on the shoulders and back. You will also need 1/32"Aircraft cable, available at most OSH or Home Depots, nicopress and sleeves and a shackle . Use two short lengths of cable, sleeves and nicopress to create a "Y" harness and loop behind your actors head. Create another loop on a longer piece of cable that you can either wrap around the rope that you're going to use or push it through the rope. Attach your cable to whatever is going to support the actors weight and connect it with your ''Y" harness using the shackle. Do NOT attach the rope solidly to ANYTHING, just dress it above the actor, you may then put the noose around his or her neck without fear of anything bad happening. It may take a bit of testing to get him or her to hang right, but this is how you do it in the movies.

Hey Zach....if all else fails, shoot the actor (hanging) from behind, dangling, frame some where below his knee and the space between his feet and ground. You could then have him actually hanging more comfortably in a chin-up like position. With the arms fully extended over the head, the sway will look more convincing. This works well when you shoot the actor on his way to being hung. Shoot to edit. Just a thought.

zach.. i can prolly make you a fake noose that will come undone if the harness fails. as for the harness get one of those rock climbing harnesses but put it on backwards soo you can ide the wire...

Another easy way to pull this off would be if you have access to a greenscreen room. You could drape a table in a blue or green chroma screen and then have the actor stand on that, with a very taught but not choking noose around his neck, and then you can have the background be whatever you want. The thing is you'd have to build everything in front of a greenscreen and you'd want the table to not be there so he'd have to be on his tippy toes.

In school a few years ago my group and I hung someone. It looked realistic. We used a rock climbing harness under the clothes. We ran the cable up through the back of his shirt and used a belt around his chest area around the rope and his chest to keep the wire close to his body and prevent him from leaning forward. We hung that wire over the branch and hoisted him up. We ran the cable along the back side of the barnch that the camera wasn't going to be on, some hammers and nails were used if i recall correctly. We continued to run that down the tree and tied it to something out of the shot to keep him up. He was able to stay up there for about a 30-45 minutes before needing to release some pressure off his chest.

For the noose and hanging,
We made a noose, wrapped it around his neck, tossed it over the tree, using masking tape, we taped the wire to the noose. We tied a new rope around the tree making it look as if the noose rope was tied up there. Using pins(i think) we connected the noose rope to the dummy rope.

I'll look through some of my tapes and try to find the footage of us actually putting it together and what we did and defintly the final outcome. What I said may not be 100% accurate but it was close to it.

Goodluck and be safe.

You can see the cable on the last one but when the video is moving you wont be able to notice and it's an easy fix

and heres a 3 second clip of the Phil running over and hitting Dave's legs

I'll look through some tapes hopefully in the next couple of days and try to find the actual set up of it
