Hand Grip and Shoulder Mount - Cavision vs Red Rock

Hey guys I have an HVX and the M2 and I'm considering buying one of these two hand grip and shoulder mounts:

Cavision -

Red Rock -

The Cavision is $200 and the Red Rock is $275. Pretty close so I'm willing to go either way. I'm just wondering if anyone has used both or either one of these and their thoughts. Any input with past experiences, comfort factor, and ease and quickness of switching from handheld to tripod and back would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks for your time,
Nick

I haven't used either, but judging from the pictures they are different quality. The Cavision includes rails, which in my mind means that less of the $200 is spent on the hand grips and shoulder mount. As well with the base plate on the Cavision, it looks pretty cheap and I'm not sure if I'd want to mount my camera to that.

The Red Rock system seems to be way better balanced, and I would say that if you already have rails and a baseplate, then the Red Rock hand grips and shoulder mount is the best way to do it.

I have the feeling that you mixed them up where you write cavision you mean red rock and vice versa right ???? To me the cavision looks more solid.

I've got a set of the Cavision and while great for the $$$, I'm ready to sell and put money down on the Redrock because it appears more comfortable and better balanced. The Cavision is pretty darn modular and has a few different ways to mount the should rest but overall, you get what you pay for. I expected the Redrock setup to be much more prior to it being released. I think it's a steal for what they're (Redrock) asking.

No mix up. The Cavision seems more modular as Chenopup said, but overall the Redrock ones just seem like a better system.

I was just comparing these this afternoon! Wound up ordering RedRocks mattebox instead. Still undecided on a shouldermount, but of the two I was leaning towards the RedRock. It just looked a bit more solid. Philip Bloom had some info about inexpensive shouldermounts on his blog, so check that out.

why isn't the indibrace included in this discussion? Same thing at a fraction of the price, with all of the quality.

Thanks very much for all of your input, guys. I'm a big fan of the Red Rock gear and they do make some incredibly fine products. I don't have any Cavision stuff so I'm not sure about their stuff. I'd been comparing the two and it's hard to make a decision based on some pictures. Just wanted to throw it out there for the 'council of elders.'

Thanks again
Nick

Hey good call PaPa, I hadn't seen this before. Looks like I can just order the handles and shoulder mount without the rail system. Pretty good call.

I welded up a 2 hand shoulder mount that works great. I included a counterbalance weight adjustment on the back. I have used it with the Red Camera and brevis-rigged HVX and it is very sturdy. I built the plate on the top front, then placed electrical conduit in an 'H' under that, capped the front with the handles and bent the rear section down the back spreading it apart for stability and holding the counterbalance weights if desired.

If you can weld I would be happy to draw up plans for you. Cost: Around $20. We have used it now on 6 films and it is wonderful.

I can't afford the Red rock but it looks great.

Here is the Hypershoulder Mount. It is built of simple and inexpensive 5/8" electrical conduit. You can cut it with a hacksaw or as I do with a cut-off saw. You can bend it with your knee or use a pipe bender like I do. Using eye protection and gloves, I use a Makita 4" electric grinder to fit the pipe ends and then weld with a Millermatic MIG welder with CO2 gas. When welding zinc coated pipe do not breathe the gases. I use a large fan and blow them away while I work upwind. You will notice it is a dual rail set up with a widening on the rear for stability and carrying the counterbalance weight set. There are four cross braces; two don't show and are under the padding. It took a little over an hour to make. The total cost of this sturdy rig was less than $20. Here are pics:

More Pics to come...:D

I use a low and medium setting on the welding. If you start blowing out the conduit, (which is easy to do) lower the setting. A great technique is to pop a little weld on where you are going to work and then weld on the weld instead of the conduit. Using this technique you can use this strong, thin, light, zinc-coated steel to build a whole lot of tools for your production company. More links:

Hope this encourages many of you to start fabricating these. It is fun and sure saves you a lot of money. :kali:

Gary,
Whats the pad made out of?

LOL! It is a block of foam rubber wrapped with cloth tape! Soft and totally cheap. It is actually even comfortable with a heavy Red Camera, follow focus, matt box and filters... and all its batteries. Isn't it cool how much neat stuff can cost so little? YAY!
