this is the first time in a veeeerrrrrrry long time that i've been excited about a blockbuster.

Anybody see this yet? I was really anticipating this one and rottentomatoes has it as a total stinker. I really want to know why.

I'm thinking that maybe I'll just go see Wall-E again... if not the Hulk.

After reading RT on Hancock... I actually WANT to read some spoilers.

i know why it's being **** on... there is GIANT HUGE SPOILERS though, so if you want to know PM me, cause I'd rather not take the chance at posting, and pissing someone off.

I heard they were re-shooting a ton of stuff as recently as a month ago so that they could water it down enough to get a PG-13. Not good.

my first impression after viewing the first trailer was awsoem ,the second changes the story from street bum to ...cleaned up crime fighter? still has me in for tickets!
ill go for soem kick ass graphics and noise!
im still laughing at the first trailer!!!!!:Drogar-Kriz(DBG):

A friend of mine interned on this set. He said that during a lot of the action sequences they'd have something like 10 camera operators with huge follow focus whips pulling for themselves, and they'd regularly crash a couple cameras per shot.

None of this is really that new to hear about, but he said it was really cool to see in person.

Saw it.. if you can handle the twists, then it's a fun movie... It's not supposed to be taken seriously. It's comedy/action... Don't set expectations and you'll probably have a fun time. Yea, you can tear the story apart but you can do this with the majority of studio films.

Also, my showing had a trailer for Quantum of Solace... so that was cool :)

Saw it tonight. I really wish people would stop talking about the "twists". It's so much nicer to go into a film not waiting for the twist, let alone the TWISTS, plural.

With Wanted having a 73% on Rotten Tomatoes, I have no idea why Hancock is rated at 35%. It's EASILY much better than Wanted. It had a couple problems, but in all, a good, entertaining movie.

And stay for the credits.

I saw it last night, it was pretty good. I found it got kind of tedious around the 20 min mark it was just not funny. But then it picked up and I really enjoyed it a lot.

With Wanted having a 73% on Rotten Tomatoes, I have no idea why Hancock is rated at 35%. It's EASILY much better than Wanted. It had a couple problems, but in all, a good, entertaining movie.

That I agree with hole heartedly.

I thought this film was a mixed bag. It has a fun concept and good cast, and a few scenes where it really works (mostly towards the end), but I found the directing kind of cruddy and the script muddled. Peter Berg never found the right tone and his direction rarely rises above the pedestrian. It makes me really worry about Dune being in his hands. You could smell a really good movie in the making, but it never quite gelled. I think the biggest mistake they made was in spending so much time explaining Hancock's origins and creating a mythology. It took too much of the focus off Hancock's arc as a character, a Superhero who's kind of a scumbag trying to redeem himself, and put it onto a lot of silly, mechanical backstory revelations. I would rather they had left his origins unexplained..And it had without a doubt, HANDS DOWN, the LAMEST villain I've ever seen in a Superhero movie. I'm talking a villain not even worthy of an A-Team episode.

Okay, out of curiosity I searched for the script for this film, and found a review of the original script which has been around for ten years. I was SHOCKED to see how little of it ended up on screen. It is a fundamentally different movie in so many ways. The only similarity they have is the name of the lead character. In fact, it's so different I can't even believe the original writers still have a credit on it. Read on--

WORST. MOVIE. EVER.

This was worse than Wanted. And Wanted was worse than Indiana Jones. This movie straight up sucked. But before I get into that, can someone please explain to me why, after ten years, are these trailers still doing the thing where someone says something, and then the other person swears, but we hilariously cut out before we can hear it? Ahahahahahah!!! Do they honestly still think this is funny? After ten years of beating the joke to trailer death? There must be someone out there who is the official gatekeeper for all trailers that refuses to release them until they have the "cut on the swear word" joke. Man.

Okay, this movie. Batutta, I'm glad you posted that link to the old screenplay because the whole time I was watching this movie I kept thinking, "this is like 8 drafts of screenplays all in one, and the person at the end didn't clean up all the stuff that no longer applied." This script was a disaster. It started out good and just like every movie this summer, completely lost its way.

Let me give you some of the highlights. Major spoilers ahead. Two-thirds of the way through the movie, we learn that Jason Bateman's character, who Hancock ran into at the beginning of the movie, happens to have a wife who's a secret superhero also!! Yes. Completely random but after about 20 minutes of exposition later (this in an 80 minute movie - I'll explain my thoughts on that in a second), I guess we're supposed to believe this was because of fate that they met. Funny, it felt to me more like lazy writing. Honestly, it felt like they wrote the last 30 minutes of that movie in a couple of days. As if someone decided 2 days before shooting that they hated the entire final act so they decided to write a new one. It was that bad, that disjointed, that awkward. NOTHING worked. In fact, there was a point where Hancock and Charlize Theron (jason bateman's wife and secret superhero) are fighting in the middle of the city (for what reason - I don't know. I think she was mad at him for talking to her kid or something) and for NO REASON WHATSOEVER, a huge storm starts circling above and TORNADOES ATTACK THEM! Yes! Attack of the Killer Tornadoes (maybe they were trying to get a little Global Warming statement in there).

Some other highlights. Hancock likes eagles. So much so that he draws them everywhere and wears clothes with eagles on them. The reason he likes eagles so much, however, is never explained. The movie tries desperately to create a mythology around these "superheros" and it just feels like a rejected X-Files episode. They were born 3000 years ago?? Are you kidding me?? They were in love several times throughout history and every time they get close to each other their powers start to wear out... is somebody writing this on their iphone?? What the hell is going on here?? If you go see a movie about a drunk superhero, is this the kind of movie you want??

Regarding the 80 minute run-time. This is actually very appropriate because whenever you see this for a Hollywood movie, that's what you want to do: RUN. Hollywood movies don't shoot 80 minute films. They shoot 110-120 minute films. So if you see 80 minutes (or even 90), it usually means that the movie was so bad that they decided the only way to save it was to cut out as much as possible so that the stupid American audience won't realize how bad it is. Which may explain the lack of explanation for hero's hawk obsession. And why tornadoes like to appear out of nowhere. Oh wait, I think I may know why they came. Because the superheros were so powerful, that their power itself intensified the weather. Yes, that's good enough for me right now.

This movie sucked. I used to think Peter Berg was an up and coming director. But The Kingdom and this prove to me that he doesn't understand story. I know you want to see this because the trailer is good. But trust me, you will be bored to tears. Good luck.

Interesting. I agree with all your points about the story, and the fight between them was completely out of place and belonged more in Spiderman 3, but worse than Wanted and Indy 4? Not Possible. Not even The Happening was worse than those. And this was better than The Happening. Please dont think that I think it was a good movie, but better than those 3 turds.

I think I've just been really disappointed with this summer. Usually there are no movies I look forward to in the summer and this summer there were like 5 or 6. Every one of them has been a letdown.

I think it's as simple as, "You're making a movie about a drunk superhero who doesn't give a sh*t." Think of that premise. It's brilliant. Now think of all the stuff you can do with that. Is any of it even remotely close to what they came up with? The mythology, the mysterious surprise second superhero? Who cares about all that junk. It's your job as a producer or a director, to deliver on the premise of the film. Don't confuse it. Don't go off on weird tangents. If they would've stayed within that narrow path, they could've had a great movie.

I think the moment I truly checked out was when they were at the dinner table and Will Smith said, "I don't age." That's when it went from a fun-flick about the aforementioned premise, to like a Vampire flick or something. I don't care about any of his past. That stuff is irrelevant when you're breaking through signs and dodging planes.

Ugh. Can you tell I'm frustrated? Anyway, I'm not going to get angry at people for liking this. There are some cool moments.

Oh, a side note that absolutely no one will care about. The house they use for Jason Bateman's character is a house I walk past almost every day (in Culver City - which I realized made sense since Sony studios is only a few blocks away). On its own, that's not really impressive. But see this particular house is tucked all the way back on a dead-end street and you would only see it if you lived on that block (I just walk around that area a lot when I'm trying to figure out a script). So I was kinda shocked to see it. Now since I also WATCHED the movie in Culver City, I wanted to scream out, "Hey! I know that house! It's right down the block from here!" But I have the feeling nobody would care. In another completely unrelated note - in the opening "commercials" before they show the film, is that commercial where that guy is trying to get to the theater. And the car literally screeches around the corner just across the block from the Culver City theater. That's when I really want to say, "Hey, don't you guys see that! It's right across the street." But nobody seems nearly as excited as I am when it comes on.

Anyway, what movie were we talking about again?

I haven't seen this movie but as soon as I saw the trailer I thought that it was bad-casting. Will Smith is such a sober, celebrity personality.
