Han Shoots First!!!!

Re: Han Shoots First!!!!

I watched the trilogy on DVD this weekend and darn it Lucas did it again! He changed the frigging movies AGAIN! So what is his excuse this time? That this is the way he REALLY wanted the movies to be? Didn't he had a chance to make it right when he re-released them? Now you have a Darth Vader (Anakin) ghost that looks younger (Christesen) than when he died... but then againg Kenobi's and Yoda's ghosts still old (Guiness and the puppet). Bah! Who cares right? After all, in an interview he said he makes movies for his friends and family... yeah right! He would be kissing millions of dirty butts if the only people that watched his movies were friends and family! He has bills to pay too...

BTW, I wished Han shoots first like in the original movies, but then again thats not what friends and family likes, just stupid fans huh?

Re: Han Shoots First!!!!

Hey, did George "fix" it so Han doesn't shoot first against Vader in "Empire"? That was a great scene, the door opens, Han takes one look at Vader, pulls out the blaster and starts firing...

That stayed the same as far as I could tell. Han opens up on him and Darth puts up his hands and deflects the shots.

There's a funny out take during the credits for the "making of" that shows a prop guy handing Ford a different gun before Darth "grabs" it (with the force or whatever), I guess they used a non-functioning prop for the real shots. He fires, then everyone freezes in place, the prop guy slaps a different gun in his hand while they're still rolling.

Re: Han Shoots First!!!!

My thinking is this:
The thing that killed Lucas was becoming a dad. Ever since then, he's no longer making films for the general public. He's making films he wants to have no qualms about showing to his own children. Mind you, he became a dad during or shortly after Empire Strikes back wrapped production.

Lucas is not so much a great storyteller writer and/or film maker so much as he is a great post production and effects genius. He got lucky with Star Wars. If you look at the out takes in the documentary of the making of featurette, you can clearly see all the horrible dialogue that was edited out. His editors saved Star Wars drastically by cutting to the heart of the story which is a paragon of a 3 act structure. His shooting script, I guarantee you, did not reflect this in it's production draft. Another perfect example of this is the addition of the horrible scene where "biggs" and Luke chat just before climbing into their x-wing fighters in the 3rd act. Good god, was that awful stuff.

Empire is the best of all the films in my view and that's due greatly in part to the direction and vision of Irvin Kershner (his former teacher at USC film school). Personally, I wish Kershner had directed the rest of the films as well. But he didn't want to citing he was on Empire for two and half years and knew he'd be on Jedi for another 3. He didn't want to be a lucas employee. By and large I personally believe this final quote is the real reason he didn't want to do it: "he had read the script for Jedi and didn't believe it". Can't say I blame him for that.

Empire is the same as it was originally cut with the exception of the addition of the view of cloud city in the background of the hallway and more shots of the Wompa creature in the beginning. (we see more of it than in the original cut)

Re: Han Shoots First!!!!

man i must be totally out of it, what's wrong with that scene? i havent seen Star Wars in years

Re: Han Shoots First!!!!

The scene isn't in the original star wars so you wouldn't have seen it. It's been added to the new DVD version (and might have been added earlier when Lucas originally released the "updated" versions).

Thing that bothers me the most about the updates is that they weren't even well done. They stand out like a sore CGI thumb. It's just awful.
