Half Off on smallHD Focus 5 Wireless Monitors *Today Only/B&H Deal Zone*

One of my really, really good friends is a sales rep with one of the bigger national gear dealers and every now and again we talk about the sales side and B&H is pretty much hated by every other retailer in the "camera" business. When cameras and electronics aren't your main business or source of income, you can sell merchandise with razor thin margins(or none at all). Some of the practices that manufactures have implemented over the last decade or so, that they didn't use before, like minimum advertised price and minimum sale price, are because of B&H.

I see. But - cameras/electronics are not B&H's main business?

Maybe the industry would be healthier if we didn't use B&H. But like Amazon they will truck on as their costumers value price and service so much. And now I can buy from B&H and save on sales tax, unlike anywhere else...

And at the risk of sounding too cynical, many companies have skeletons in their closet..

True, though you’d kind of represented them as a local, “family” business with the language coding that goes with that. They have recent, recurring and long standing issues that are still unresolved....and they have anti-competitive business practices....

I buy from them, especially when I need commodity items are short notice because they are consistent and being able to deliver in those circumstances.

You're right, John. They're not a mom-and-pop store and maybe my judgement is clouded by local bias and having been there numerous times.

I guess I just feel like I don't detect the same animosity on this forum towards Amazon. But Amazon operates similarly and is larger and more destructive.

Think sparkly, shiny and controlled by a cartel.

Can you link an article about b&h and the diamond business? I don't see one.

They don't strike me as a front. Just a bare knuckle competitor

I think the business model of all razor thin profit margin businesses is the same (Amazon Walmart uber) - dominate the market with best price/service and worry more about gross profit than per-item margin

Not a front, just other business dealings.

I don't want to belabor the point, but I'm curious/confused. You made it sound like B&H can lose money on cameras because they make money on diamonds. Is that so? Then what's the end-game if they're not laundering money or something? Drive competitors out of business and raise prices? I just don't see how they're not trying to make a profit right now through sales volume, higher-priced accessories and passing on to the customer the savings of efficiency and scale.

(I'm not trying to defend their brand or business practices, just confused about the diamonds link)
