Half off on 3700 Panny

Dan,

Thanks for your thoughtful reply.

Don't get me wrong the current 3700 and color EVF bundle is an excellent deal. Except we're 3months out from NAB and that deal ends March 31...

I believe Panasonic has done more harm than good with these promotions. I would bet they have alienated more customers than recruited with these offers. And it does not bode well going forward. Should a HPX-4000 be launched at 60K who in their right mind is going to buy into it with a precedent of discounting already set?

Yes I'm aiming high with the AVC-Ultra concept and yes I'd doubt we will see that as a replacement for the 2700/3700 mash up.

But Panasonic are missing an opportunity and should have a F23/F35 style head with a dockable AVC_Ultra recorder. For better or worse when top DP's see the 3700 they see an ENG camera. Even repackaging that camera into a head unit with a dockable p2 recorder would see more headway into the TVC, feature and TV Drama work. Why? because that's what the Genesis, F23 F35 and Red look like.

I fully agree with your call on 3D. The Players have committed and there ain't any pulling back from that lemming herd.

Barry (as usual, is right) Red and the 2/3" ENG market are a world apart. This is not going to change with the 2/3" Scarlet. Looking at the last Red Day photos you might be inclined to think that have even veered further off the ease of shoulder mount shooting. No, I doubt many have traded in their Red's on a Panasonic deal but I would not be surprised if they had sold them privately and taken up the deal with a lesser trade in.

Panasonic is battling the EX-1 & 3. A camera so good that many at Sony will off the record say, has made their job very hard. Add the Nanoflash to the entire EX line including the 350 and you have buyers questioning why they should look at the 700 or 800.

How do Panasonic compete? Pretty simple really. Get a HPX-300 out there with a 1/2" sensor. Bundle the HPX-2700 with a factory lens special like the 350 and come in
at the 20k mark. Release a HPX-4000 combining the best from the 2700 and 3700 and drop the 3000/3700. At least stem the tide.

What I have put to the Panasonic people I know is this: Where is the Panasonic that created the DVX-100, the HVX-200 and the Varicam? I suggest you ask the same question.

Disclaimer: I own Red's, 3000, F900R, F800, Varicam, 502, 171, EX 1& 3's. Each of those is out on a job or scheduled for a job in the next month. As much as you want it, there is no camera to rule them all. Yet. I have no knowledge of any future Panasonic cameras. Hypotheses are purely my own and should be replaced by HPX-Unobtainium

I've been wondering this for awhile...
