Half Ball??

I am looking at some Manfrotto heads to replace an old Gitzo head and in the description it says "half-ball"? I've never heard this term used before. Can someone explain what this means? I am trying to deide between two heads and one lists "half-ball" and the other one does not. I just want to make sure I am buying the right thing.

Thanks.

A half ball leveler is a 75mm, 100mm or 150mm hemisphere that sits in a similarly sized bowl. THere is a locking knob on the bottom. This allows the head to be adjusted if the sticks are uneven.

This type of head mounting is only good for light cameras. Anything more than 60 lbs or so is too heavy for even the biggest ball leveler. In that case you would go with a Mitchell mount and just spend extra time adjusting the legs.

Thank you.

i was given two heads to choose from and they are the Manfrotto 504HD and the 502HD. The head will be sitting on Gitzo Legs that once held a Gitzo G1380 head. I am shooting with a HPX170.

Not sure what direction to go in.
