Hair light and back ground light. Should I use barn doors

Forgive the newb question. But I don't have my light's in my possession yet and have no prior experience.

So basically if I have a hair light and back ground light, do they require barn doors. I only have 2 sets for my key and fill. The over head light and back ground light are missing the barn doors.

Is this a big deal. Thanks
 
You may need barn doors for the back light to control flare in your lens. Doors are nice for background lights to shape light and to attach gels/patterns.
 
Sometimes you need them, sometimes they're just a waste of time. There are exceptions but just about every light should at least have a set of doors and scrims, whether or not you need them depends on the situation.

Here's my situation. I have 4 mini pros on there way to me. But there's only 3 sets of barn doors. There's a local flea market that is open all the time. There is a mini broad in there but it doesn't have any barn doors. BTW. Anyone know if they will interchange with the min pro.

Should I go ahead and get the mini broad.

Really. Part of the reason I want the mini broad is I was told it was supposed to be the 4th light on the mini pro kit. Anyone have one of these kits and could answer that. Thanks.
 
I think the barn doors are necessary on lights like these or fresnels. You can clip a little opal or 216 diffusion on there to make that hair light less showy. You want to make sure not to let it drift too far over them with the back light and the barn doors could help that. Less is good.
 
I think you are more likely to need the doors on the hair and back lights than the key and fill (you dont want stray light going in the lens) - of course a full set is ideal.
