Hacking the P2Store

The updated P2 store should have:

1. Larger capacity.
2. Faster download/upload capability, ability to edit from the drive.
3. No partitions, but file naming, maybe from preprograming a rom chip.
4. Included power supply.
5. selectable file splitting at 4 gigs, 8 gigs, 36 gigs for easy burning to the latest dvd's.
6. display for file viewing, or at least icon viewing.
7. Maybe 2 ports for downloading .
8. Might as well make it like a firestore, so you don't need both.

The OS is ulmost undoubtedly linux.

The only problem I could see is if it's in Japanese.

Furthermore, the OS itself could have an autodetecting mechanism that divides capacity by P2 card size inserted.

Personally, I think the P2 store is waaaaaaaay overpriced.

To me it is only worth 400-500 bucks tops!

The real question I have is why in the world wouldn't Panasonic simply make a P2 socket interface that can record directly to the P2Store ala Cineporter????

Demand is certainly there.

The only thing I can think of is they are looking to the P2 for revenue.

I'm not sure this strategy is working.

What do you think?

You mean you guys have not taken this thing apart YET?

hahahhahha

I think making a socket P2 interface is not really somethng that seems "factory" quality to me. Sure it would be great if it worked, but from the manufacture, it seems as if there could be some "issues" with fool-proofness, that they most likely didn't want to associate with.

You need raid speed, converted to some type of cable, into the P2 store.....

Actually it seems like it should be easier to do than a firestore method, especially if you had a 1 gig buffer, but the fact that you have to hit the start button, might make things quirky.

I think it will be awhile before they get the flawless performance we expect, in an HDD unit.

Ok,Ok. I have replace the drive with a 100GB Seagate. Normal Hitachi Travelstar in the P2 store. Main problem is that the store will 'only address 60GB' as someone assumed earlier. (think it was SAM) Not to difficult to take apart. 4 screws and you can access the drive housing. be very careful with taking the drive out. i will try preformating the partitions before installing and see what happens.

I hope Panasonic is aware of these attempts.
Which I admire btw.

It's definitely time for a new, improved, larger capacity P2 Store.

The market is here. Give us the product!

I had a good think about this, and I guess my issue with large capacity drives comes from fear of failure. At least with p2 cards you swap them out quickly, thus limiting the amount of data that could be lost. With an 8gb p2 for extra precaution you can burn onto a dual layer DVD for instant back up (which I have done and know a few poeple that do this), not too painful, but a bit of a hassle unless you have someone to specifically swap put the cards and do this a you go. If you fill a 100gb drive and it dies, well thats a lot of shooting on there, even 60gb for that matter. Then there are always solutions to every problem. I love a tapeless workflow, but the associated costs and problems always scare me for my personal stuff.

Any updates?

Any updates?

It sounds like some of you hacked your P2 Store. What was the outcome? Any success? someone please help! I need more space on my p2 store!

What happened to the 100 gig drive once placed in the P2 store?
No one is following up.

Maybe I'll be the guinea pig this weekend if the others don't speak up soon.

No matter what size drive you put in there, and if it works, you are still limited to 15 partitions, as far as I can tell. So what dictates the amount of footage you can store in the p2 store is not the size of the HDD, but the size of the p2 card. 4x15 = 60gig. 8x15 = 120gig. So, right now the largest drive it would even be beneficial to put in a p2 store would be 120gigs.

When the 16 gig cards come, that figure would double. 240gigs. and so on.

Am I right in my thinking here? You are limited to 15 partitions with the p2 store, and so there isn't even a point right now, than going larger than 120gigs.

hallo AJ101, whats the final result of your try to make the drive bigger?

would be very nice you would tell.

best regards

hallo marc,
what will you do?
will you try the p2store expirience?
i hope aj101 is still member here and will answer my pm.
looking forward to it.

Sorry, snpx. No we have not pursued it any further. P2 Store only allows offloading three 16GB P2 cards, so has become quite useless. I am curious to why only 15 partitions though. Even if i use an external 500/1TB USB HDD and offload from a HPM100 or a HVX200 with 16GB cards, i only get 15 partitions.
This is the workflow i've decided if we have no access to a pc interface.
16GB x 15 partitions to a 300GB external USB from a HPM100. Then take the drive to an external 4TB USB Drive with one touch back-up and make a safe copy. Attach new 300GB to HPM and repeat process.
Anyone think this will work? Obviously we will have to test setup first. Will keep you guys posted.
