hi

Im searching for a low price microphone and recorder, to use for mostly dialogs and maybe to record some sound fxs. Will be used for shortfilms.

Will this package do: H4n and ntg-2, or do you have any better suggestions (around that sum of money)?

thx

Im not familiar with many mic/recorder combinations but its well known that the NTG-2/H4n combo is notorious for producing low levels during recordings. When you increase these levels in post you also increase the noise floor as a result.
The NTG-2 is a great mic (and I have one) but I wouldn't use it with the H4n unless a preamp is put in between them.
You can change the recorder to something like a Juicelink DT454 or a Marantz PMD661 if you're set on using the NTG-2.
You can also change the microphone but Im not familiar with any other mic other than the NTG-2 that are as good in that budget range.
Just my two cents...maybe someone else on this forum can chime in on more options for you.
I'm currently using my NTG-2 with my DVX100 but plan to use the Marantz when I upgrade to a DSLR.

NTG2 and H4n is known for low levels, due to not sooo good preamps.
The Tascam DR100 is supposed to be a bit better.

If you have more money to spend, you can get a Rode NTG3, thats fine with the H4n

The Tascam has this same problem as well: See thread here.

It basically boils down to adding almost $300 to you're budget.
You either spend $300 extra on the more sensitive recorder and get the $600 Marantz PMD661 or spend the extra $300 on getting a louder mic like the $600 NTG-3.
Hope this helps.

Thx for answers, so the Ntg-3 should work well (for the price that means) with the H4n? Is the NTG-3 good for recording dialogs?

From what I've heard its great for dialogs.
Very directional so you're gonna want your boom operator to be listening keenly to the mic as he uses it so as to make sure he's getting the audio.
It requires phantom power only as it doesn't have a batter option like the ntg-2.

for some tests by Sam Mallery with the NTG-3 (and other mics too).
