H4n Vs Edioral R-44 What Does Everyone Think

disregarding cost which is a better recorder/mixer to plug mics into, it seems like the edioral is far superior in how little battery power it uses, does anyone know where it stacks up in terms of sound quality etc?

Neither is a recorder/mixer. Both are recorders. Neither will provide the amount of clean gain and routing and monitoring options available from a production mixer. As others have said, if comparing the two side by side, the Edirol is a much more capable field recorder for production sound work. However, for about the same price as the Edirol, the Tascam DR-680 delivers better pre-amps (unless you opt for a third party mod), and two additional analog inputs. Either of these two (The Edirol or Tascam), make a for a very capable field recorder when coupled with a quality production mixer with direct channel outputs.

the h4n is a more consumer device targeted towards people wanting to record music where as the r44 is more of a prosumer recorder for production and music. the only reason i'd suggest the r44 over the tascam 680 is that there are POTs for each channel whereas the 680 is one POT and buttons to change which channel it affects. that is, if you're not going to be using a mixer. if you're using a mixer with direct outs, the 680 is much better. as far as mic pre's, can't comment on that. i do know that there is the 3rd party route for mod'n the pres on both models...
