Hi all.
I have read a lot about the "noisy pre-amps" on the H4N but since most of what I was recording was action based or crowd based, plenty of sounds going on etc, I never really experienced it and it has served me well over the past few years.
This week, however, I had to record a bunch of voice over files for a tutorial I was asked to create. I followed best practices and tried to use the best quiet location I could find. Covered the table with a towel. Used an external mic, Azden SGM 2X with the super-cardiod barrel removed and the omni directional attached. Kept the recording level at 60 on the H4N.
All was good, until I tried to boost the level a little in Audition. Then boom, suddenly I could hear what folks had been talking about. I did not detect much hiss in my monitoring earphones but I guess the level was just too low. The voice quality was good but the pauses in between have a very distinctive hiss. But not to worry, ran it through the new Adaptive Noise Reduction in Audition and the audio now sounds great. The Adaptive Noise reduction takes about a second to kick in but works very well. Fortunately I always leave 3 to 4 seconds clear before I start talking.
Anyways, all turned out well, but thought I would put this out there.
