H4N AT897 advice?

Hey,

I have the h4n and a friends letting me borrow the at897 to shoot a scene in a couple weeks. I just want to make sure I'm ready. I'm run and gun which I know isn't the best thing. I wrote the dialogue so it will be a close up of the actor and I can get in close with the sound as well while having the camera on a tripod while I boom the mic. Just wondering what the best recording levels would be?

Also, there will be a scene where they're rushing through trees and I would like to get some sounds of sticks cracking, branches being pushed to the side as they run...would the h4n itself be better for this or the combo with the h4n and at897. And I'm guessing the sound levels will be different for this.

I don't mind if you tear me up as long as you give me some advice I can use on the shoot. This will be for a web series I'm creating.

Thanks in advance.

Just go practice with it first. Nothing beats trying it out.

This is the type of stuff done in audio post, usually by the Foley team.

agree with 8string, but to be more specific, i thikn the h4n by itself would be fine for the running through trees. It should give you a nice stereo effect. obviously just be sure to keep the mics in the clear. keep it with the actors, not the camera if you are following them. as for levels, you have to set that in each situation. i dont know what the scaling is on the h4n meters, but you want to keep your peaks under control.
