H4N/7D Workflow

Hey guys, I've mostly done "event" type video work in the past, and never really had to deal with separate audio/video files like I have to do with my 7D. I do have an H4N, and I've found - the more scenes I shoot with both the camera and the H4N, the more difficult it becomes for me to manage the files.

How are you guys working and managing the files efficiently?

Rename Them, put them into folders. STE-00001.WAV is not a good search-able way of storing different days audio data. Tag up metadata from your stereo editor or whatever other you use...
WAV format supports that.

PROJECT-DATE-TAKE-STE-00001.WAV is much easier than STE-00001.WAV

The best thing to do is keep a sound file log. That will really help you or as mentioned have it stamp the metadata to the file. I work with the 5D/7D and I provide the client with a sound log for each file(BWF) and the file also stamps time of day on it for me.

p.s. I use the Fostex FR-2 and I have used the Zoom H4 and what I did with that one is just had the script supervisor right down the sound file name. Also slate every take.
