H264 errors

All software I use to try and encode H264 gennerates errors? Vegas, sorrenson 4.1, premiere 6.5 does H264 only work with uncompressed files maybe? I have been feeding it microft dv.avi files so far

thanks

Me, too. Maybe the Apple codec still isn't quite right (for Windows). But Others have had no problems...of course, they might be special. :)

Well I feel a bit better knowing I'm not alone. I can render them out in QT7 pro but the file sizes are way to huge. And when Is the great apple going to release the final QT 7 pro? Before I get the gold watch I hope!

Last I checked, QT 7 is still in Beta form for Windows. So maybe that's why the H.264 problems are happening. This should be remedied soon I hope.

I've donee some test h.264 compressions on my mac and can say that doing it through quicktime pro absolutely sucks and does not work correclty for me. The way i've got it to work flawlessly and with literally no degradation/artifacting is to do it through FCP's Compressor. I've used the "h.264 LAN streaming for Quicktime 7" setting and have got amazing results. I can't wait until the rest of the windoze world discovers how absolutely amazing this codec is so it becomes universal. Screw WMV.

:) You do know that WMV is h.264, more or less, right? And has been for a while.

Source file=1.65gb....QT7 H264 compressed version= 948 mb....Yep I'd say that sucks. WMV version= 59mb

Could you elaborate on this? That's interesting. What is the "more or less" that is h.264 in WMV? I'm on a mac and get amazing results with the H.264 codec. I get 80 - 85% of the file reduced. It could be that Apple's version of h.264 is not optimized for Window (yet) or maybe will never be? As Windows Media Player never really worked that great for Mac users either. :(

Unless I've been misinformed, MS' WMV has used the h.264 specs since version 9. I'm sure they add their own little quirks to keep it "innovative", but the (de)compression algorithms are from the specs.

I've been encoding H.264 from QT7 pro preview edition on windows since it was first released and have had no problems if I use proper settings. If I use incorrect settings, of course it will generate errors.

I'm also getting great compression ratios. I have gone from Windows DV with 24PA timelines as well, no problem.

One of the fastest ways to cause problems with QT7 on windows is to ask it to change frame rates especially when you're using pulldown information in your source. Keep same frame rate for compression by using "Current" as your rate.

Another common mistake folks use when compressing things is to take the slider description of "high quality" as somehow meaning high quality with small files. Think of the setting as amount of compression applied. Therefore, a setting of medium should be your starting point. You'll be surprised how quality will stay high while file size gets small. If you are going to the web don't expect to have a full screen image either.

Hope this helps some of you.
