H264 Codec vs Sorenson - Darker!

Hi.

I am using premiere pro to render out a movie. However there is a significant brightness difference between encoding with H264 and Sorenson? The H264 is always noticibly brighter than the Sorenson version. The Sorenson version looks correct!

Has anyone else experienced such strange behaviour?

Cheers

Robert

I have. Usually, any video encoded with Sorenson or Sorenson 3 will become darker.

I have also had prolems with playback, even with DV avi's. My major issue I believe are video card settings, such as acceleration, overlays and whatnot and how the player uses them. Could be just as much a software/driver issue as the actual player or file. What I have found is that by fiddling with the advanced settings in media player and have it look just like it does in Vegas or After Effects, will suffice. it throws off the aspect ratio of the player, but at least the colors are correct.

I don't know why the H264 would be brighter, only that Sorenson by nature will darken video.

here's a link to show you what I meant, but using windows media player:

Not what you are dealing with exactly, but it will give you some idea of what I mean.

I too noticed H.264 vs. sorenson or MPEG4 compression comes out a little washed out. But nothing a little tweaking in the brightness contrast of the h.264 settings can't fix. Maybe they'll fix this in future upgrades or maybe it has something to do with my process or 'quality' of PRE-compressed footage. (that is DV to H.264 - maybe the higher quality (uncompressed or HD) versus lower quality (DV) footage yeilding better results because there is naturally more information in the higher-quality mediums. Just a guess though. :undecided

I find that DV to H.264 is darker ... ?
I've heard that anything for the web requires a gamma correction of .7 which is brighter and what I use when making an H.264 file for the web. It looke too bright in preview, but looks right in render.
