H1 stopped recording during event, plenty of battery, plenty of space.

So, I'm less than impressed by the H1, price is good, but everything else is pretty lacking.

My latest quibble happened tonight.

I started the unit recording for a panel discussion at a conference, and after the panel I retrieved the recorder, only to find the unit was off, blank screen.

I assumed that like an idiot, I had forgot to start the recording, but upon turning it on, I did capture the first hour and five minutes of the discussion, then it stopped. I had a 2GB card in the unit, and I still show 1 bar of battery left.

I was recording in WAV format, Lo Cut was on, Auto-Levels On...

Any ideas? I'm pretty frustrated with the unit at this point, and I don't feel like I can trust it do even simple things.

If you were recording at 24bit/96kHz that would be about right; 1 hour stereo @ 24/96 = 2 gigs.

What Class rating is your card? If it is low, it is the same as a HD Movie Capture, it will stop automatically!

I'm not sure what the class of the card is, it does not say on this, or any of my Micro SD cards, but it would seem that the bitrate of audio is considerably lower than that of video, making the Class rating seem irrelevant...

Do these units overheat? Is there somekind of auto-shutoff, if the Hold button isn't set?

I'm stumped.

Ok, so my best guess now, is that the batteries ran out, and that the H1 is simply poor at gauging the actual battery level. I believe the battery cut out about an hour into the recording, and while I was able to turn it on afterwards, there was barely any power left, despite the display showing a bar.

I say this because since the event tonight, I've only turned the unit on a few times, and while I was just playing with it, the battery blinked and the unit shut off.

I've got a fresh battery in, and I'm going to do a loooooonnnnnnnng recording in Mp3 format to confirm.

I'm also worried that I might have one of the units with the battery drain issue, seems like it should have lasted longer than this.

Video is usually measured in Mbps, audio is usually measured in Kbps. You'd need an awfully horrible card that couldn't keep up with an uncompressed audio recording.

A P2 card can record 1GB / Min, an uncompressed audio CD will play out about 0.65GB in 1.2 hours. Think of how slow it would be if it took 1.2 hours to transfer 40seconds of video off a P2 card, that is the speed of read / write you need for audio.

I'm not saying that there aren't cards out there that are that slow (or ones with errors that would cause a crash), just saying that flash memory that any card maker with a halfway decent reputation should be more than fast enough to keep up with the recording.

I always recharge my battery before a gig. I thought they only went for 2 hours on a full charge? Should be in the specs/manual.
