i waited that someone will post this theme.. but since no one did.. here we go:
the new mpeg4 compression will be supported by quicktime and soon (so they say) by all standard DVD players. looks like the answer to the promising WM9. it's a very interesting encoding, anything between 3G to HD, scalable, low bitreate.. all experts, you're welcome to wash us with some technical facts :)

Re: H.264

Are you saying that it will be a Quicktime equivalent of WM9?

Interesting stuff there. Looked kind of like a sales pitch, though.

Re: H.264

I'm pretty sure H.264 and WM9 are two separate things, though they are are part of the next generation DVD standards.

For one thing... H.264 is a codec created by Apple, and will be part of Quicktime sometime late this or early next year. Don't think that'd be part of Windows Media 9....

Re: H.264

According to the PowerPoint presentation linked to above, WM9 is a variant of H.264. Evidenced by the line item, "WM9 is a variant of H.264."

;)

Re: H.264

I work in the videoconferencing industry and H.264 has been implemeted in most manufaturers systems. The buzz was enourmous about 6 months ago, and still is actually. Higher video quality at lower bandwidth is helping businesses deploy video across their lan & wan. I'll be interested to see what it does for one of my video clips.

Re: H.264

If you haven't already, check out the keynote from the Apple developer conference. They address H.264 being used in the next version of iChat (included with Tiger). They also demo it via 4 way video conference. Looked pretty impressive, albeit just a video clip of marketing propaganda. Regardless, it peaked my interest.

Re: H.264

Bring it on.. I have watched a few WM9 HD DVD's on the 100" screen and its very exciting.

In case you missed it (well it wasnt very public) Microsoft has been buying up Theater chains in the US and outfitting them with Digital projectors to project WM9 stuff. They also are working with some transfer houses to offer "free" uprezing from DV to WM9 for projection.

Re: H.264

I dont know.. but I just tried the WM10 player.. and its not to bad.

Re: H.264

I believe its in SPK2.

Microsoft invited me to some stupid thing 2 weeks ago that I went to, promising me a copy of WinXP version 2. (SPK2). I went, was gonna just grab the disc and split, but they held off till the end of the 8 hour "lecture" to give em out. After 15 minutes I got bored real fast so I hi-tailed it outta there without the disk. In the good old days they would give em out at the beginning in a goodie bag, I guess they got wise.
