H.264 video file: Highlights blown in "Quicktime Player" / not blown in "Preview"

H.264 video file: Highlights blown in "Quicktime Player" / not blown in "Preview"

I noticed something weird.

After exporting a video file from Resolve 17 (HD, H.264, 100000 bitrate) and opening the video with "Quicktime Player", highlights look horrible and blown out.
On a Macbook Pro as well as on a Mac Pro 2019.

But: They actually are not blown out, as in Resolve everything is perfectly fine (Aces workflow, target: Rec709).

When opened with "Preview", everything is also fine - just as in Resolve 17.

This leaves behind a little insecurity that I don't like or need.

Does anyone know why this might happen?
Or how to change it?

Thank you very much! And best regards.

Philipp

I checked it with VLC player and everything looks perfect.
Thanks for your quick reply.

Anything that needs to be done on my side?

Just because I am curious now: What exactly is the QTP gamma shift issue?

Interesting.

QTP also FREAKED me out a couple of times, when it drastically changed the overall colour of a video as long as the play/pause/transport field is visible. It changes back when the control field disappears. But: How can Apple do this to us?? :)
Haha.

Thank you very much, Jim!

Perfect.

I kind of feared I need to tell my clients to stay away from QTP now...
Good. Will do!

I searched the forum but couldn't really find anything.

Thanks everyone!

Problem solved, and your help is greatly appreciated.

The first link I give makes some suggestions on what you can do. (I'm sure you can find Resolve-centric blogs and videos, too).

The second goes into plenty of detail about the basic issue...
