H.264 hardware acceleration for rendering playback -- How?

I’ve been getting a lot of high bitrate H.264 files recently, and they all want to be rendered before they’ll let themselves be chopped without a lot of kicking and screaming.

This is becoming tedious.

And so I am wondering if a DX-10 capable video card that comes with onboard H.264 decoding (for Blu-ray playback) could be used as an accelerator to render my footage instead. If so, how?

My premonitions (of DOOM!):
The video card’s decoder won’t support certain H.264 profiles and will not work with all H.264 footage
Certain cards may not play nice with Premiere (Should this be an issue? Is acceleration a simple Direct Draw function?)
The card may only want to decode H.264 streams from a Blu-ray drive (this may be total rubbish because my understanding of MPEG 2 transport streams is not only limited, but limited to MPEG 2)
When Premiere thinks I’m so much as looking at the effects palette, I’ll be back at square one, and will have to re-render the whole bloody thing anyway.

So, anyone done this or know how to do it? I'm just looking at the new Geforce 8 /9 series and the new HD radeons, not Quadros or the ATi equivilant.
