h.264 and Vegas

I just upgraded my Quicktime 7 for Windows to Quicktime 7 Pro...what I can't figure out yet, is how to encode my Vegas creations into the new h.264 codec. When I check the "File | Render as..." menu item in Vegas I only see an entry for Quicktime 6, not Quicktime 7 or h.264. Should I see the others? Do I render in another format and then use some other tool to conver to the new codec?

Please help!

Thanks,
Larry

Hey Larry, don't think you'll ever see an upgrade to Quicktime in the Render As until Sony releases the upgrade ... i.e. it doesn't happen on it's own. There should be ways to render out to the new h.264, but I don't believe it can be done through Vegas.

See if this helps you, I just googled it: http://www.mainconcept.com/h264_encoder.shtml

It shows up, and you can use it. It even works a little better than QT7 Pro does – filesizes end up smaller.

Something's just screwy with my machine. I've never had anything but grief trying to do QuickTime. Even going through Sorenson. :(

On my machine it is lited as qt 6 and h.264 doesn't work... Something about "can't recognize codec" about 5% into rendering...

I'm using Vegas 5...I selected Quicktime 6 for the "Save as type", then I clicked on the "Custom" button, then the "Video" tab. Finally, I changed the "Video format" from "None" to "H.264". About 10% into the render I get an error as mentioned above.

Your not alone dmitri and Larry R. Got the same problem. Hmmmmm Interesting. Google will have the answers. I'll be back!

Well that was pointless. Although I did find some funny monkey photos.

Nothing like a good funny monkey photo

I did read somewhere yesterday that you can use a frameserver and send the video out of Vegas into "something" that will encode to the H.264. Hopefully I will have more time to investigate it today and see if that is a viable option. I'll post whatever I find out.

In the meantime, you can use an "advanced" MPEG-4 codec like DivX or Xvid. Quality is excellent, and plays back using any MPEG-4 codec.

My $80 DVD player (LG) plays MPEG-4, and image quality is noticeably better than DVD's MPEG-2 -- files sizes are smaller too. No menus, but works great as a loop for presentations.

- Also waiting for H.264...

why not just export the movie to DV... then open it in the QT Player and export as an H.264 file??

Why is it that i can not export directly out of Vegas? Good idea though i will try it.

Loki - That is a good idea, and there are many other ways to convert a video to h.264, but we're trying to figure out why we can't get our Vegas to do what other's Vegas can do. Why is our Vegas "special" and "different". :) Not that there's anything wrong with being different.

Thanks!

Would people on Mac's with just the new QT7 player be able to play a WMV9 file? For some reason I though Larry had started this thread with the idea of rendering out to QT for the Mac users ... at least, that's the only reason I render to QT at all ... otherwise I much prefer WMV9.
