I may not know shi* from sherlock, but correct me if I'm wrong in my assumption that... isn't Sherlock Holmes supposed to be about solving a mystery and not about swashbuckling action adventure? I've never read any of the books and haven't seen a Holmes themed movie in quite some time, so maybe I have no idea what I'm talking about.

You are not wrong, and while watching the trailer again its clear that most of the action is from the same few scenes, so maybe this is another case of a studio mis-representing a film ala "The Road". They are probably afraid of people thinking it's going to be Masterpiece Theater or something. There is a dark side to Holmes that hasn't been explored much on film, namely his drug addctions, so maybe they'll get into that aspect more. My favorite Sherlock Holmes is Hugh Laurie in House.

Yeah, hopefully it is just the trailer being an inaccurate representation of the final film. But if that is the case, they risk people coming to see it thinking that it is going to be an action adventure film, and then feeling cheated. Of course, there is nothing wrong with some excitement, derring do, and humor in this type of film. As long as they don't bury the detective aspects in chases, fights, and fart jokes then it could be good. They'll definitely need a second trailer that focuses on the detective aspects more than this one did. Still though, I was pretty shocked that this particular trailer seemed so action oriented and goofy.

I never thought of House as being a sort of Holmes character, but I guess he is. Interesting observation on that one.

House...Ho(l)mes...Wilson...Watson...The show creator has said in interviews it was the inspiration.

I never heard of this movie, but as soon as I saw this post I immediately thought of Jason Statham as Holmes, punching villains in the throat.

There is action in the stories. And Holmes is known as a good fist-fighter. He's also described as an expert swordsman at one point.

In addition, he actually flies over a waterfall while locked in hand to hand combat with his arch nemesis, Moriarty.

If you haven't read the Holmes stories, you should. They are really really fun.

This movie looks pretty fun, though it kind of looks like Lock,Stock and Two Smoking Sherlocks :)

The big question is Moriarty. Your hero is only as good as your bad guy.

There was a good Holmes on British TV in the 80s, played by Jeremy Brett. They definitely added in some of his dirtier side. And Brett was just great great great in the role.

I wouldn't say those two are mutually exclusive. In any case, this is Guy Richie's interpretation of Holmes. I'm interested to see how he and RDJ spin the character.
