Guy and his Kids send GoPro camera into space

How cool is that kid's dad?

"Johnny, what did you do over the summer?"
"I recorded video of the earth's stratosphere. Here's my YouTube link."

- an American classroom, 2010.

I swear I've seen this done before. More professionally, and maybe for a camera commercial or something? Can't remember, I think it was posted here.

It's cool nonetheless.

Very cool.

Now they need to get to work on a probe that can make it to Zarmina's World (Gliese 581g) and back.

It is really cool what can be done with very little money now. Inspiring.

In the past year or so there have been a lot of these projects around the world by various people and schools. Each had basically the same setup and resulted in some incredible photos and videos. It got me thinking that our organization should do one too. So later this year we'll be getting our volunteers and students involved in a high-altitude balloon project called IsaraOne.

Can't wait to get started! :)

^^^ That's awesome Kirk!

Thanks to the OP (jason.adams) for posting this.

Within minutes of me watching that, I sent it to my best friend, who is a physics teacher at a high school and runs their Robotics Team. He watched it, then showed it to his robotics students. By the end of the day, we had his team, several Graduate students from Purdue, a manufacturing facility here at the college I work at, and myself all on board and planning to make this a reality for a high school/community college joint project.

As this develops further, I will make a thread and reference this one. I'm helping wrangle a flip camera together for the flight, and will be taking photos of the students and the build process. I'm super stoked, and amazed at how quickly a cool idea from a video on the internet can affect people's lives in a positive way. What a fun looking project! I can't wait to get started!

Yeah, I remember, and yes, it's posted here somewhere. Don't remember exactly what it was for, but a camera commercial sounds right. Either way...

cool... but I'm pretty sure it's not legal without FAA clearance, and potentially dangerous to aircraft, especially in the busy skies around NY.

Ha ha. Yes. That's me.
Not only that... the international convention that considers you to be in "spcae" is 100 km above the earth, which works out to just over 328,000 feet.

Sorry kids. FAIL.

Let's just call it playing dodge-the-planes with a gopro that is really really high. :D

And now the tv channels are talking about this on the news and instead of talking about the go pro they make people believe that this was filmed using the iphone that was used as the GPS locator.....

Yeah, I was going to bring that up as well but everybody seemed so excited about this I didn't want to seem like a downer.
