Gunshot explosion, dust, and debris

Hi,
I was wondering if any of you special effects guy know the easiest way to include bullet holes, debris, and flying dust from gunshots. What my idea was, is to build the set needed, in this case, a small restaurant, and film the shooting scenes, import the bullet hits, but use off-camera people to shower debris, and to then smash up the walls, tables, mirrors, and utensils to create realistic bullet holes, as there will be a scene in the restaurant which happens right after the shootout. So, all in all, the problem is getting the bullet hitting the wall effect, and since using a real pistol would not work, I am stumped trying to make the hits.
Thanks in advance :kali:

okay, here's the question, since I didn't see it in your post. Budget or no? I know several way to achieve this, but a couple of them will require either a budget or a really dedicated SFX guy.

It is labor intensive, but totally believeable. And NO pyro.

There is a rather meager budget... the entire budget for the film is in between 5-10k, but that isnt enough to get prop guns. We will probably use airsoft guns for the props, but the problems are the realistic dust and explosions. Like I mentioned, we will be constructing a set restaurant for the scene.

I have a set of bullet hole brushes for Photoshop and they work very well.
There are a lot of ways ti get debris and dust. Just add the holes later.
