gun shot wound/bullet hole

are there any tutorials out there to do a gun shot to the head? mainly between the eyes? just looking to do a quick bullet hole and a little bit of blood trickling down from the wound. working with windows and premiere. don't know much after effects.

The internet is full of surprises, but I;ve not seen such an exact tutorial. Here'd be my approach, specific to After Effects (I'd shoot myself in my own head if I had to do this shot in Premiere):

1. Find several tutorials on motion tracking; this is the key to your shot's success.
2. Take a still frame of the actor and paint a bullet hole yourself (talent/patience-permitting); this gets motion-tracked to your actor's head.
3. Find another tutorial on animating masks on After Effects Solids. You can animate a bead of blood this way.
4. Pre-compose the bullet hole and the bead of blood and track it to your actor's head.

(alternatively, you could do the whole head thing with makup, shoot it as a live plate, and composite that in, but that's more work)

You'll definitely find motion tracking to range between doable and impossible in After Effects based on the particulars of your shot. Sometimes it's amazing, sometimes it's really tough. Motion tracking is part craft, part science. I think it largely depends on the movement in your live plate. If your actor leaves the frame during the shot (falling over dead, for example), things get more challenging. If it's just the classic "stunned reaction to the headshot" with just a little actor movement/sway, it should be a snap. The tighter the shot, though, the more work you'll need to put into your entry wound and animated-blood detail.

Try motion tracking first with just with a black dot or circle; you can nail that, then replace the dot with your bullet hole.

are you actually wanting to show the moment of bullet impact? if so, something like what atomick suggests is the way to go. But I've also seen very successful 'shooting' scenes where the moment of impact isn't seen - instead cut to the victim just afterwards - the advantage is that then the hole and blood etc can be done as purely physical make-up effects.

I'd use the garden sprayer method, which can be found online. Just tape the hose to the actor's face, position the cam so you can't see the hose, the fire away. It'll send blood flying! Then, cut to the actor's face, using a piece of plum as the hole, with blood all around it.

This would have been so much easier to have done as a practical shot with makeup prosthetics or Cinema Secrets (they're even on Facebook). Just something to keep in mind NEXT time you shoot.

that looks nice. you think that having the prop effect(unfamiliar with lingo) on the location where the bullet wound is supposed to be, clone it out and when the gun shoots unclone it?

i haven't shot it yet. i'm still in pre-prod planning things out...mainly this particular scene.

For Ultra realism, you could do the head shot as a 3d simulation along with blood as a fluid sim. probably do a low poly head model then use projection mapping from the live shot to match the live shot.

then use object tracking on the head to do full object replacement (On impact only).

not sure if there are any tutorials that specific, but you may find seperate tutorials on all those different methods. look out for:

(1) Low poly head modelling.
(2) Projection Mapping.
(3) 3d Object tracking
(4) 3d Object replacement
(5) Fluid simulation
(5) General compositing

Why model the head you may ask? well for realistic blood splatter/drip the geometric shape of the head is needed for the simulation, otherwise you could just use basic stock footage (which looks too fake IMHO)

It's not hard for the make-up. This is something I did for a small student project. (That's me, BTW, I did my own make-up)

The key is layering.
