Gun shot/Splatter

I am shooting my short in less than a month, and one of the shooting logistics I have to figure out is how to make a gory death for one of the characters.

I have a shot where someone raises a gun to persons forehead and fires, all in a wide shot, so I want to be able to see a puff of blood and brain comin out the back of the guys head.

Can anyone recommend some ways of achieving an effect like this? in Camera... I would definately prefer in camera if possible.

I was also thinking of maybe doing it as a compositing effect, but I don't know how good that will look.

And I really don't want to have to shoot around this, I know I can... but I need the impact of shot on camera.. it just won't have the same effect if I don't show it.

Try a ziplock bag filled with whatever you think looks like brain matter. Rig this bad boy with an air compresser. Stratigcally place this bag next to the persons head and bamm. Try a google search, I remember finding tons of homemade brain matter tutorials. Good luck and don't kill anyone..

I did I very similar effect to yours for a film a year or so ago.

Firstly, stay away from pyros for something like this unless you really know what you're doing. There are safer, better & cheaper ways.

I used a system like Daygola814 suggested: A compressed garden sprayer to blow blood and gunk out of a hose, gaffer taped to the actors head... hehe, he is now mostly bald. Gaffering is the most dangerous part!

Then in your application of choice, (I used Commotion) paint in addition blood and brains. I also painted out part of the actors head so it looked like it had been blown away. The effect is only 12 frames long but is quite gory. It has got quite a loud "urgh" responce from theatre audiences.

I can show the clip if you give me an email address or a means of posting it. Then you can judge if it is the right kind of thing.

oh dude I have to see this!!!! post it if you can or maybe email it to me @ jayekko@yahoo.com

thanks

I'll try and email an mpeg4 to you.

It is very short - 12 frames, but I'll leave a little header and footer if I can.

Coffee, I sent it, but it is 2.3MB.

Let me know if it doesn't come through and I can try again.

i don't know if this will help but when i had to do something like this all i did was shot from an angle were you couldnt see the side of the head that was getting shot. then i had a latax ballon filled with half air half fake blood taped to the guy that was getting shots head. i then had a needle taped to the end of the shooters gun then when he shot him he just pushed the gun out a little bit and it poped the ballon it worked great but i suck at at making movies so you probebly won't find this very profissenal

I'd like to get a parts list, and a place to find them. Especially the Humphrey pnuematic valve. I already have the "airbomb."
Could Liz give us a place to find parts?
Jeff

Thanks Jarred... The blue colour correction is because it is part of a flashback sequence BTW.
