Gun Shot Flash

I'm not sure where to post this question: cinematography, lighting, effects, so I'm throwing it out here, but if a mod needs to move that's fine.

I'm filming tomorrow (as part of a timed contest). I have a gunshot that will occur in a dark room. We don't see the actual gun being shot, but I want to see the flash of light on the wall from the shot.

What is the easiest way to do this practically. Do I just turn a light off and on quickly and then add the sound effect in post?

Thanks a lot,

Chris

Heya Chris. I shoot the entire piece with normal lighting. It is always easier to darken than to lighten, so you could crank the levels way down without artifacts and then simply keyframe the brightness to normal for the shot.

Or, use something like a strobe light (a camera flash in most instances will not be bright enough) to light the scene one pop at a time. Position the strobe near the end of the gun so the shadows cast are close.

You can google images and find decent muzzle flashes that you can composit in.
