Some random guys were shooting a music video with a Varicam today...coupled with a bunch of lenses and a massive glidecam it was apparently a $160,000 set up. Anyhow, it's a sweet looking (and MASSIVE) camera....
The guy said that even with the varicam, the skies are always blown out on overcast days (like today). He used a 1/4 double fog filter combined with a 1 promist and it gave the skies a really soft, non-chromatic-abberationy look that resembled film remarkably closeley. It was too fuzzy and blown to to really look like film, but that was the effect they were looking for. The promist/fog combo allegedly allows you to blow out highlights and have them look fine, though, and it appeared to do that very well.
