Guardians of the Galaxy > Star Wars > Star Trek

I may be the only one to say this, but personally to me Guardians of the Galaxy was a much better space opera than Star Wars and Star Trek combined. Mainly because of how relatable and human the characters are. Marvel did a good job making that series. Guardians of the Galaxy essentially was what Star Wars Episode 1 was trying to be except it succeded at it compared to that. Yeah it may not be original, but the characters and how human everything is is what makes it great.

Do you think you'd feel the same way if you were alive in the 60s and 70s and saw some ST and SW then?

Sometimes living through a lot of time and change produce a different perspective, appreciation.

Worst take ever

I mean, even you admit that GOTG is unoriginal

GOTG is a fun movie, exceptionally well directed. But I don't think it's that memorable although I plan to see it again at some point

A New Hope is a masterpiece of world-building and the 3-act structure. Effortless story-telling with perfectly executed emotional cadences

Star Trek is a huge body of work. And it achieves some things the other two could only dream of: deep philosophical exploration (again and again and again) as well as a coherent and consistent and fully fleshed out vision of the universe it has created (rather than a kind of sketch of it like Star Wars). And if you want relatable characters, look no further than the Kirk/Spock/McCoy dynamic. There's way more there than anything in GOTG. And every Trek series has had unforgettable characters and relationships. But there isn't any single Trek film that matches the brilliance of A New Hope, although Trek 2, 4, and 8 are excellent films.

You miss my point. While GOTG's plot is simplistic, it's beautifully more character driven than the other films.

I don't miss your point. I don't agree that it has better characters than the other two. At all. And the first thing you said was that it was a much better space opera. You're welcome to like it more but this analysis is bunk.

I'm not sure I'd call GotG a space opera, I'd definitely would not call ST a space opera, so by that metric, I agree with you.

However I feel this is a bit of an apple to oranges comparison.

GotG feels like an action comedy in a scifi setting, SW is a classic space opera (whatever that means, I'm just saying that because I've heard it a million times) and ST is exploratory scifi.

One's enjoyment of the film is probably highly affected by the enjoyment of the genre. Happy to accept some saying they like one more than the others, but a claim that one is better (whatever that means on the basis of whichever criteria) than the others... I'd need justification a lot more detailed just even start considering the statement seriously.

Funny timing, I'm rewatching all the Star Wars for the first time in a long time and doing it in "chronologic order". So far done 1-3 and just started Solo (then Rogue One then the rest).

Impressions are also time and place. Star Wars hit me like a hammer in my early teens, whereas the classic TV Star Trek was std (but great) fare by then. The First LOTR hit me in a similar way. Also really enjoy the first GotG but agree it is more of an upbeat comedic / action flick. Never really got into the Star Trek movies for some reasons, or the myriad spin TV spin offs.
