Grungy look

I think doing it in post is best...I shot one of my films on a DVX 2000, then added grain and a film look through VASST...I edited on Vegas which is the easiest program in theworld and you can download it for free for a trial...some outlets are selling the version that is about to be updated for only $99 or you can buy Vegas Movie Studio for around that price,,,The Film look I used was a preset called PUSHED 16 which blows it out a bit too but I was shooting an edgy guerrilla Gangster type theme so it looked perfect...if any of this is of any value let me know and I would be happy to elaborate...

shoot with the chroma level at -7, gain at +9, norm color matrix, cinegamma d.

over expose half stop. try it it looks nice.

^^^Why over expose half stop and gain +9? Just curious. When simulating film, i never really considered altering the exposure settings in the camera and instead leave this for post. I figured the simulation of film was more to do with contrast and color saturation.

I'll try your setting suggestions and see if it does make a difference.

Also, what about the difference between shooting 24P and 24P(a)? Do you think that it matters in trying to simulate 8 mm film?

its to add noise, and the slight over exposure is just ot give it that "automatic Super8 camera from the 70's" look. they never really expose right, unless its a full manual one and you can meter it yourself. it depend s on what youre going for.

the gain is to add some noise to the image. but yea its better otdo all this in post. but i feel it looks more natural is you do it in camera.

I don't think doing this in post will get you satisfying results too easily.

IMO the best advice given was the one involving the crappy 35mm adapter. Take a look at this stuff shot with Sony Handycams and a crappy, 20€ adapter.

This one with just the cam:

And this one with a crappy CD-spinner:

After some good CC it would looke really nice. Remember to turn the detail level in your cam down to -7 (important!)

My passes done on one of my shots.
Shot clean on f5 default dvx, dirtied up in post. I tried not to go too extreme with the grit - didnt want my shot to look like it was shot with a lousy handicam

CC'd:

Looking at the two i suppose i should have added more contrast to the cc'd one

dasonras, could you post some caps using that method, it sounds like it should yield good results... I agree Magic Bullet is a little too much like the layers in Photoshop most people throw it on without thinking, you can always tell in a student festival or some such when its just had magic bullet thrown on top without pre-consideration, I actually uninstalled my copy... for now

MalcomOng I really like the look you posted for your example, but I still wouldn't consider it to be that close to 8mm.. Another thing we miss out with the perfection in digital is the size of grains or fading stock..
