Growing Vines - Is there a better way

I ran across this video today:

It should be easy to make those vectors in illustrator and bring them into AE, then use write-on to reveal the vectors, simulating growth.

But I was wondering...is there a better (easier) way?

Out of the few ways I can think to do it, the Write On effect following a custom path to reveal is the fastest and easiest way. I think you may even have luck making 5-10 of them, and simply rearranging their rotation and scale, create a ton of interesting designs that do not look copied.

That's some pretty sloppy animation in that video.

Inverted track mattes are the best way (which is essentially what the Write On effect does). I've found the Write On effect to somewhat limiting so I generally use Trapcode 3D Stroke. Let's you have a bigger stroke than the 50 that Write On is limited to, more options for animation, size, tapering, etc.

Definitely looks like 2D illustrator vector art with a mask to reveal it. You can also accomplishing something better using a 3D program. 3D Strokes is probably your best bet
