Grip for Ikan 8000 Monitor to an HVX200

What are HVX 200 users using to grip their IKAN type monitors to the camera, tripod, etc.? I'm trying to work out grip for the HVX200, Firestore 160, IKAN 8000HD monitor and Sennheiser P2 wireless Mic receivers...

Is there some kind of clamp that can grip a 15mm rail, or grip my Manfrotto Tripod arm?

Any ideas greatly appreciated.

Hi Jon,

I have a new 170 and Ikan 8000HDe, and hated the little included adapter, connects to the cold shoe, with a 1/4-20 post at the top that screws into the monitor. I shoot sports, so this unstable setup would not make the grade. I wanted the monitor to sit behind the 170, closer to my eyes, placed between the pan arms. The monitor also needs to pan with the camera.

I just yesterday completed my own homebuilt mount which does just this, and will be using it tomorrow. Using a stock 1/8-inch steel plate, 2-in x 12-in, I drilled out holes to sandwich between a Bracket1 baseplate and a Manfrotto quick release plate. I drilled a hole at the monitor end to connect the Ikan with a short 1/4-20 screw. The only trouble I had was this moved the center of gravity (COG) back approx 2.5 inches, and the pan arms took on a ton of weight. To somewhat adjust for this, I slid the quick release plate as far forward in the head as possible, but I only gained an inch, so it is still heavy. Fortunately, I am shooting the games from above, so the forward tilt of the camera will compensate more. Total material cost, about $10. I also had to buy a drill press and metal drill bits.

I wish that Bracket1 would make something like this, it's not too different from their wireless unit holders, except the plate would not be bent and positioned differently. I am thinking about getting the long Manfrotto quick release plate to offer more options to adjust COG. I also want to make a mounting plate that is 1/16-in thick for less weight, maybe aluminum, I am just concerned about the possible bounce in the metal, the monitor is pretty heavy with the battery in place.

I should take a picture tomorrow to show you what I did. Maybe Bracket1 will see a market beyond wireless units and start making monitor mounting brackets. Same technology, just some new designs.

I've used a couple of options for my Z1U rig...

For stationary work on sticks, I prefer a Manfrotto Super Clamp with a Manfrotto metal flex arm that holds the monitor up even with the camera, but is clamped to my tripod leg (cost is around $65). It's pretty sturdy and adjustable, but it locks me to the tripod.

For handheld use, you might do well to use a piece from Zacuto, I think they call it a Z-Mount (cost is around ($144). For that option you gotta make sure you also get a ZGrip.

Ikan also makes their own monitor arm with an invert bracket and that combo is pretty sturdy as well (that will run around $100).
