I saw it last night too, and have to say it was one of the most awesome films I've seen this year. You really Don't get this kind of experience very often where the whole audience was cherring, holwing, and clapping through the entire film. While I am not very familiar with the Gindhouse films of the past, I definintely understood all the gags, and knew why they were funny. I'd definitely go see it again, and highl recommend to anyone looking to have a good time; this is a must see in an audience packed theater.

There's a part of Death Proof where the girls were at some restaurant. Some random woman comes up to them and they start acting out this scene as her acting like a guy. But before she sits down..theres suuchhh a jump cut and off timing when she goes to sit down. It was really funnny cuz she repeats the lines like 3 times.

Films where you're allowed to be a bad filmmaker. Sounds like my kind of films. So these movies didn't make that much money. Are we surprised? Can't be a huge audience out there for bad 70s movies.

The Weinstein Company is digging itself quite a hole. They're trying to pull off how they started Miramax - A big horror movie which will then pay for all the smaller more thoughtful dramatic features - hope one hits it big, spend a ton on Oscar campaign, win a few oscars - everyone in town wants to work with you. Repeat. But their "Scream" equivalent was what again? Pulse? And their "Good Will Hunting" was what? The Matador? Transamerica? (a perfect example of the Weinsteins pubbing a so-so flick into something that actually garnered oscar nominations - ridiculous). Anyway, Harvey seems like a big dick. So I guess this is all poetic justice. Time to rush Sin City 2 into production anyone?

I think the budget on this was around 50 million, so after domestic and International I think they'll break even easily, and then the DVD sales will all be gravy. Will it set the box office afire? No, but it will make the Weinstein's a tidy sum. Also, this flick will play on the midnight circuit for about a million years. I thought it was a stupid fun time at the movies and not something to be approached with a critical eye if you want to enjoy yourself at all.

i doubted. budget was $53 million and it only made $11 million this weekend. opening weekend is always the biggest which means next weekend it'll make at least 2 or 3 million lower. i think DVD sales might be better than expected though...they'll be lucky if they break even at this rate. good thing they both have good track records. shouldnt be too hard for them to make up for this with another hit film.

It's being released as two seperate movies internationally. So double the box office there. It might make its money back, but probably not. I'm pretty sure that films which only make 1/5 of their budget opening weekend never break even. Add onto the 53 mil budget another 30 mil in marketing. Now it's only 1/8 of what it cost to make the film. Add onto that that the studio's biggest percentage take from the box office comes opening weekend (why movies want to open big), now the percentages start to sway towards the theatres. Gotta pay percentage points off to Tarantino, Rodriquez, the actors, etc. And wasn't this movie supposed to be the movie you had to watch IN THE THEATRE? So who's going to rush out and watch this on DVD.

This movie will probably never make its money back. But who knows? A miracle could happen.

Planet Terror: ****ing Awesome! (And I'm generally "meh" on Rodriguez)

Death Proof: Boring as hell! There was soooo much time spent on both groups of chicks talking about nonsense. It wasn't even funny "Grindhouse" dialogue like in Planet Terror, it was just too much "Tarantino-style" "cool" (but not really) dialogue.

I got my money's worth after Planet Terror. I should have just taken a nap through Death Proof, woken up when the crashes occured, and then gone back to sleep. It would have been a better flick.

Oh yeah, and MACHETE was funny as hell.

No, it's being split into two movies. And they're each longer with the missing reels intact...Hey, one interesting point of discussion with regards to Death Proof. Someone mentioned they thought the second half was actually a flashback showing why Stuntman Mike became a psycho-killer, that the first half killings were his revenge for what happens to him at the end of the second half. I didn't make the connection on first viewing, i thought it was all linear, but it's an interesting notion. Maybe when he said he was "kidding around", he really meant it.

I don't get the people complaining about the dialogue in Tarantino's part. Unless of course they hate Tarantino. Or they don't understand that old explotation films that had one or two big "stunts" couldn't afford to do much more and were filled with lots of dialogue.

I enjoyed both films for different reasons. I have to admit though, I got a little bit bored with the dialog banter through the middle of Death Proof, but I felt it all paid off in the end. As far as the possibility of the second part being a flashback, has anyone found any clues to support this? Did Stuntman Mike have a wound in his left arm early on in the film? Hmmm

Planet Terror was a total blast. Completely manic and merciless. Loved it!

BTW, does anyone else know Carpenter movies well enough to recognize where they ripped off his music? In the chaotic hospital scene, I could swear I heard the same damn music from "the crazies" in Escape From New York. I mean, it was actually the same music in that scene. I wonder if it was sampled from Carpenter's soundtrack?

Gotta see the whole thing again. Unfortunately, I think this is the next thing that's going to be imitated by everyone.

Here be SPOILERS from now ons. Ye be warned!

I noticed that too. Funny, I watched EFNY the day before I saw it too put me in the mood for a bad ass Kurt Russel. At comiccon RR said that JC's music was played on the set. All the music was inspired by him. Carpenter rocks.

And I read the script. The second half of DP takes place over a year later and Mike dies at the end.

Well, I saw it Friday and I just got back an hour ago from seeing it my third time. Needless to say, I loved it.

It's too hard to pick a fav. PT was alot more fun, but I think DP was better made. I call it a draw.

Either way, that was the most fun I've ever had at a theatre before. I honestly haven't enjoyed something on this level since KBv1.

I tell ya though, QT is getting dragged through the coal on message boards. Granted, DP was a bit "talkie", but in no way did that hamper my good time. I concur though, it would have benefitted from being screened first. A solid pic imo. If someone came to this "surprised" that Tarantino included Tarantinian dialogue in his movie, well, you must not have seen many of his films. DP is practically a chic flick girl power that surprisingly both sxes can enjoy. Still, this dialogue sounded better coming out of Kietels and Buscemis mouth 15 years ago.

I literally lost count of how many times QT made references to HIS OWN films! I loved it, but it was just insane. It was like he was parodying his own movies/style. At least a few dozen references. That has to be a record for him.

And i love how both movies make reference to each other, as if DP happened long before PT. Cool.

Too bad they had to cut alot out so they didn't get an NC17. This film could have used some hardcore nudity. It might as well have been NC17, noone went to see it anyways.

Fake trailers were awesome. Fu Manchu made me piss my pants with laughter. The adverts for the Acuna Boys eatery were hilarious. Zombies trailer was soso. Wrights was awesome. Roth's was some sickc sh!t.

Machete gave me w00d. PS. RR is in prepro on this as writer/director. It's going DTV. Can't wait.

A sequel is a strong possibility. Tarantino is already planning on his half. It's an "old school kung fu movie" in mandarin with bad dubbing. Sounds like fun!

BUT, where was QT's trailer? Ya know, Cowgirls From Sweden? Anyone remember hearing about this? Although there was a 5th fake trailer in the movie, "Women in Cages". Maybe that was his?

Good choice of actors. M. Biehn was awesome, as was Shelton. Russell was drop dead amazing, and a hell of a John wayne impersonation. Zoe Bell was a great little find. She should act a lot more. The camera likes her. The best acting awrard had to go to "Rapists #2" in PT. Now he's got chops.

Now, if QT doesn't make that motherf^%^&$@ Inglorious Bastids I'm going to kill myself. Yeah, this was a fun detour, but it's time to show his ace in the hole. THIS will shut up all the naysayers and haters. Sorry, but I think directing episodes of CSI and the Jimmy Kimmel Show are beneath him.

RR needs to get on SC2 already. I will officially boycott his movies if he even attepts to make Spy Kids 4. That's a promise.

This will be alot of fun on DVD, as long as it's not a bare bones up your nose with a rubber hose version. Hell, I'm still waiting for the KB (edited together) version to come out.

I don't know what people expected going into this. It wasn't mismarketed in any way. I got what was promised, and I'm here typing up my review with a big fu*&% sh!t eating grin on my face. I for one am a satisfied customer.

I agree with everything you said. Death Proof was a little dry at times, but the payoff was great.. Planet Terror totally rocked, loved the whole of it.

all in all I think both films were great, I love the self-satirizing style both of them pulled off beautifully. What a blast. The fake trailers had me pissing my pants. It's like I was watching something out of the Kentucky Fried Movie, esp. women in cages.

I agree- this'll be the "next thing" that people imitate. But you could set your sights lower!

Planet Terror was more interesting to me because it's more of what I want in my bad movies: zombies, **** blowin up and bodies flying around, toxic gas, a drifter with a mysterious past, the tough chick. I loved Death Proof also and it's payoff was a great way to transition into the credits.

Couple of points (with spoilers):

The mirror shot is intentional, it's SO easy to frame that stuff properly and it's not robert's first time making a movie where there are mirrors in the shot. If you think that's an oversight and an error that was not intented then you're watching the movie wrong.

It's pretty difficult to imagine that Stuntman Mike survived at the very end and that the two halves of Death Proof were shown in non-linear time seeing that Rosario Dawson's heel ENTERS HIS EYE SOCKET. Even if it didn't jab into his brain and kill him (which I believe it did), his eye would've been fake and he would've had more than that one scar on his face in the earlier scene. But you were probably already leaving with your back to the screen because Death Proof was so boring that you sat through it right up to that point.

If you're thinking about hatin on this movie. DON'T. ;) All the reasons to hate on it is what make this movie great.

saw it today, loved it. women in cages is an actual movie, not a fake tariler. pam grier 1971. dig the magic f-ro baby.

the theatre near me played it at midnight this weekend so i caught it on saturday night. i loved every second of both flicks, too many people go in there built up on hype so they can poke and prod, I went in to be entertained and i was. These movies pay homage to some of their influences, that's why it's great.

Watched it twice. Best experience I've ever had at a theatere PERIOD! Amazing time. Wonderful direction by RR and QT, what an amazing job they did. QT's writing is mind boggiling, you have to watch it more than once to catch all the names and quircky jokes they through in during mid sentences. Our theatre was going nuts during Planet Terror, and laughing in outburst during the fake trailers, and many loved the dialogue of Death Proof, got tons of laughs. Then Death Proof kicked off and people were yelling. We all fell in love with Zoe and her friends even more and when the car chase came on, it was the greatest thing I have ever seen in my life and finally A REAL CAR CHASE WITH NO CGI!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ZOE WAS ON THAT CAR BECAUSE SHES A STUNT WOMAN!! how sick is that sh!t. At the very end, the whole theatre clapped and cheered so loud that I couldn't even here myself yell. Best-time-ever. I love both these directors more than anyone on the PLANET and I love them to DEATH. lol pun not intended?

seen it thrice now... I love both of them ok

So RR didnt really make a Grind House film he made more of an bad 80's film but I have to admit this is his best work to me. It was fun and cool to see so faces I havent seen in a while... The funny thing is when his movie is intentially bad its good when they are not meant to be bad but serious but end up being bad they suck.

I think most people will not like QT as much but its is like the 70's films and like vanishing point and I love the whole feel and pace and when the first big action takes place look at that editing and effects and stunts AMAZING and very well excuted. The writing was amazing and Kurt Russel was fun. I love Death Proof Very much and the shot choices and a real car chase... I felt like I was watching Vanishing Point again.

Now RR was a laugh riot 80's bad film but QT was a more serious 70's fuel inject action..... I love theme both also the trailers.... and I found out RR is making Machete now.... perhaps he has realized making bad movies on purpose should be his goal...?

also I went different theaters and they had signs talking about the intentions of the films and why the look grainy and old and missing reels lol people are stupid.
