Grid Cloth

After looking at this diffusion test, I figured that I liked full grid cloth the best.

To save money, I was thinking of buying quarter grid cloth so that I can just double or quadruple the cloth if I need a half grid or full grid.

But do 4 layers of quarter grid cloth have the same effect as 1 full grid cloth?

I don't think that you could expect it to behave exactly alike... when layering so many cloths you'll off set the grid and the result could vary from each setup. Don't save money, get what you need.

Won't be the same. More than likely you'll get a tremendous amount of light loss with 4 layers of quarter grid compared to 1 layer of full.

I was down at a fabric shop picking up a muslin for a photography background and saw grid cloth on a bolt, called something different of course. That stuff probably isn't heat-treated or anything but I have my doubts about there being much difference. Lots of things sold for filmmaking purposes have been repurposed from other uses in the first place, and then marked way up for the filmmaking market. If you were willing to hem the edges and put in your own eyelets you could save a bit of $$$.

Side note: If you've ever seen shower curtain used for diffusion you'll know it can be quite nice. I found some shower liners (because they were white vs. frosted) at Wal-Mart for about 5$ each and grabbed 3 for my product photography setup. The shoot went great.
