Hey guys,

Just got a quick question about grey scale and colour sticks for clapper boards... In what circumstances would they be of use and why...??

Thanks a lot

If my color sticks don't glare, I can use them as a guide for more accurate colors in color correction. Otherwise, they just help the sticks stand out.

The idea behind something like the DSC SlateMate is that it gives you a constant color reference for every possible scene. You'd use this in post to color correct to make sure every scene was being rendered accurately. Of course, this only works if the slate is used under the lighting that is being used for the scene, but if done methodically it should be of huge benefit to the colorist in post.

Many Cinematographers will use a grey scale in this manner.....
They will shoot a grey scale for each scene in light that is of a normal
color temperature. They will then tell the colorist to time the color to
the grey scale. The grey scale shot in "white" light will give the colorist
a reference point, so that if any of the lights on set had a colored gel
on it, the color timing will be accurate, and reflect the color that
the cinematographer recorded. This technique can be used for tonality
as well.
