Grey Bars

When I use the 16:9 preset the black bars appear grey when the picture fades to black. It seems to be that the black is darker than the bars, making the bars appear grey. Is this a correct assumption. To remedy this I applied a black event for the video to fade to witch I made not as dark making the black bars appear, well, black. Is there something else I should be doing.

Re: Grey Bars

I assume you're talking about watching this on a DVD?

Default black -- like the black of a track background -- is IRE 0. A DVD player will letterbox a 16:9 video, but will apply black bars which are IRE 7.5. They WILL look grey when you fade to black, because they ARE grey.

Your solution is a good one. You can also apply a bottom video track and keep a black card underneath your entire project to catch any fade. What you then do is apply the "Computer RGB to Studio RGB" color correction effect to it.

IF you crop to 1.85:1 or 2.35:1 (or anything wider than 16:9) and go to DVD, you would notice a TRUE black band between the 16:9 bars the DVD player applies and the top and bottom of your video. This happens for the same reason. The way around this again to apply a black card with the RGB effect to the BOTTOM video layer, and crop that card to 16:9, not 1.85 or 2.35.

Re: Grey Bars

when I saw the name of this thread, this was the first thing to pop into my head;

You!, I wanna take you to a Grey Bar
I wanna take you to a Grey Bar
I wana take you to a
Grey Bar
Grey Bar
Grey Bar

Sorry.

Re: Grey Bars

Thanks David. Yes I am referring to DVD and thanks for the suggestion. Either way seems to work just fine. It’s just something I have been working around for awhile and thought I would see what others had to say about it. I did not realize the bars were IRE 7.5. Learn something new every day. Thanks
