According to my APPLE Final Cut Pro book, Advanced editing and finishing techniques for FCP 4, in the Keying chapter, it states that you cannot get a key from MiniDV. I have heard of people be able to set up their DVX in front of a green screen and pull a key with no problem. I have even seen some examples in the screen grabs section. So could the APPLE book be incorrect?

You can key DV footage but it's going to take more work to make it look good compared to any 4:2:2 or 4:4:4 capture systems. The 4:1:1 sampling means that true color info isn't recorded on every pixel. This makes matte edges jagged. There are a couple of plugins in FCP to help with this and there are some 3rd party filters that help.
