Green Screening -- FCP vs. Motion

Is there any advantage to using the program Motion for green screening? Otherwise it would be easier to use FCP. But does motion have more capabilities / is it more sensitive? I don't know much about this. Thanks.

Depends- neither is ideal without adding some plugins. Better to use Shake or After Effects.

Well my project is due on friday. I have shake but have no idea how to use it. How can I get some pluggins and how would they help?

But if you're limited, use Motion, as you can easily draw a mask around your subject, and having done both, I find Motion's tools to be easier/better.

Anyways- I would suggest FCP- easier to get a good key. Motion has better masking tools but I've had no luck getting good results with it's keyer. FCP's chroma keyer has finer control. Still you can't expect a good key without perfect lighting in production.

Just a helpful hint, you don't have to get everything keyed out in one instance of the effect. I normally use 3-4 instances of the green keyer and mask around certain parts in FCP to get it to look the way I want.

Charlie,

Do you stack the filters on top of each other, or are you keying out a portion, exporting a QT file, reimporting and keying again? Just curious.

Normally I stack and mask as needed. Although keying and exporting might yeild the same results...but I've never tried that, seems to be a lot of file storage.

I really need to figure out why I don't have keylight for AE, it never came in my AE bundle and it's really annoying as I would like to do more greenscreen work but I'm not a fan of FCP's keying filters when it comes to that. Anyone have any suggestions? I'm running CS3

Charlie,

On the AE CS2 disks, keylight was not installed as part of the AE install. There was a separate keylight installer that had to be run independently of the AE install. It likely is the same with CS3 (which I don't have yet and may not purchase since I find the combination of Motion and Shake perfectly adequate). You probably are aware of the need for a separate install, but just in case . . .

DVgarage has keying plug ins that key in realtime in Motion using the GPU, very nice, but unfortunately I couldn´t pull a key nice enough for my needs (might be lack of skills though...)
Shake was too massive for my needs, so I settled with Conduit (nodal compositer for FCP, also DVgarage) and get my jobs done...

In FCP Studio 2, Motion includes Primatte, which is a better keyer
than FCP's chroma key plug-in. Just send the clip to Motion,
pull your key, and save it back to FCP.
