Green Screen?

I am sure this has been covered already, but I cannot find any topics on it.

How do I achieve the green screen effect. Are their any programs I can use to accomplish this?

Most keying plugins in NLE applications are dubious at best. In particular, there are serious edge bleeding issues - A lot of this has to do with the fact that DV is just not suited to traditional chroma key techniques. However...

I use Ultra 2 with my DV and HDV footage and the results are stunning. One item in particular that presents challenges is hair. Blonde is especially bad. But Ultra 2 handles this with deft alacrity.

The product is a bargain if you are doing a lot of keyeing.

After Effects is a commonly used compositing program with several tools for chroma key effects, though it is very difficult to achieve professional results with DV footage as vagfxg33k stated.

In that thread I actually posted some results that you can download. They are uncompressed AVI files, so they are a little large, but it shows that using a piece of green fabric that is so wrinkled that the shadows are overpowering, plus using just one light with no control of spill works really well with the software. It's just a good piece of software that is pretty effective.

Did anyone notice glaring greenscreen problems in KING KONG (in the ship deck)
I kept noticing it Naomi's blond hair, her shoulders...

Also while she performs for KONG on edge of the cliff - the lighting was very different from the background.... almost like a studio shot...

maybe coz i knew they were composite shots (thanks to kongisking.net videos) i was 'looking' for clues...

i'm glad someone else caught those mistakes...the whole movie i saw horrible rotoscoping and bad keying, especially in Naomi's hair.

Keylight and Primatte are two of the BEST programs for compositing. After Effects uses them well.

Nothing I would call 'glaring' issues... though I did notice on the shot where
she and Adrian Brody are reunited atop the Empire State bldg., with the sun almost
directly behind them, it seemed a bit odd, because they should have been in silhouette,
but they were not at all. But that's just nitpicking an overall awesome technical achievement.

Regarding the greenscreen discussion, your first best move in creating a good
greenscreen shot is getting an HVX200. The HVX is capable
of shooting much, much better material for greenscreen composites than DV, since it's 4:2:2 (and HD, of course!):)

I've actually done a good deal of keying, but have never been able to achieve what I would consider a "Good Key" from DV footage. Between the 4.1.1 color space and the 5.1 compression of DV, there is just not enough data to pull a good key. I have used ultra and it does a fair job. I have used Ultimatte and Primatte with fair results. These plugins work best if you render out an alpha channel and then apply it to the footage with a slight horizontal blur on the alpha channel. DVmattepro does this automatically and DVmattepro is probably the best DV keyer out there in my opinion. It's a plugin for AE or Combustion and I think it runs about a $200. You can check it out on www.dvgarage.com

I have aso had the great oppurtunity to do some keying from footage shot with the varicam. Man, it's great. I can't waite for the HVX.
