green screen

Does anyone know how to get the chroma keyer to work better in vegas or is there something better. I noticed there is always a jagged edge around the person. is there a plugin to get finer lines

Re: green screen

I don't have a ton of experience with it, but have you played with the blur amount settings? I've managaed to remove white walls out of the background with the blur amount settings, but I've never had to cut anything out really crisp.

Re: green screen

Yes the keyer offers a feather/blur control, which can help. Another feature that works "miracles" on DV 4:1:1 footage is the "chroma blur" plug-in. Put it in the chain BEFORE the chroma key effect, and set the blur to about 2 pixels (horizontal for NTSC, vertical for PAL) and 0 pixels (vertical for NTSC, horizontal for PAL) and it'll really clean up the jaggies.

Re: green screen

Yes, chroma blur definitely helps quite a bit. But it lays the render time on pretty thick. Just FYI.

Re: green screen

You can also add multiple keys so you don't have to specify a large all encompassing threshold range, you can use smaller multiple ones. That may help you some.

I'm unaware of any other key plugins for Vegas, the ones available for After Effects and other packages are much, much better.

Re: green screen

I posted this photo in another thread about chromakeying, which is on topic here:

This was done entirely in Vegas.

Basically, to get rid of the jaggies, the first thing I did was use the Secondary Color Corrector to make the greenscreen pure green.  I had to do this in multiple steps, and it wasn't perfect.

Then, I applied the chroma blur.  Then the chroma key.  I also blurred the edge of the chroma key.  Cropped; added a starfield from the Media Generator as the bottom layer.

The light was shot separately from the model (actually, the Kenner/Hasbro toy) in total darkness; I used a BLACK chroma key and made it the top layer, then applied moderate light rays.

Thanks for the words of encouragement David. I'd love to come back here one day and eat my words.[/quote]

However... #3, and #4.. still unsolved.

I'm a few hours away from buying a Canon XLS1 and a new DSR-11 (an ebay auction that ended with no bidders, turns out the guy lives a few miles from me)

I'm hoping the new DSR-11 will do the trick. If not.. at least I'll get a new DSR-11. LOL

Re: green screen

Well, the deck issue . . . I dunno. If it persists with a new deck, then we can look at it again, in detail. I pretty much never print to tape, but when I have, it’s never been a problem.

As for the resizing, I’ll take another look when I have Vegas in front of me. I meant to before; I just . . . kinda forgot about it . . .
